quick question on buying a USED tank that is fully stocked.

ok a guy had an ad in the paper listing a 75 full reef setup for 1200. way out of my price range, but i called anyway.

i dont remember all the rbands, and so on, but it;s a 75 , stand, canopy, sump, skimmer, return pump, mh,vho, dsb, over 100 lbs of live rock, a plethora of shrooms, softies, some lps and sps, about 2 billion crabs and snails, lotsof fish and stars.

well anyway, it's way too much for me at the moment, but i think it's a good deal. so my question was whether he was willign to part with any of the stuff, instead of seeling the whole package. naturally i knew what his answer would be, the moment the question slipped out. "it owuld be hard to sell any of the parts, as they are all needed to keep the inhabitants alive" yeah duh, brain fart here :)

so i explained to him that i was really only in the market for the tank, since thats what i need. he said he would sell the tank but not unless he was able to first sell off all the inhabs first. i explained that i can get a brand new aga for 120. and suggested that he try selling his inhabs to one or more of our lfs, but they are all only offering him store credit. which does him no good, sicne he is moving 800 miles away!

so i said, well, i understand the spot you're in, but i am unable to shell out that kind of cash right away. soo he made me an offer:

tank, rock, and all inhabs.....300

now i dont know about you, but i think that a 75 reef ready, with over 100 pounds of rock is well worht 300, let alone the corals, crabs, snails, stars, and fish

so here is my question for trt...

assuming i get this next weekend.. what is thebest way to transport everything. naturally thetank can't just be loaded up in the van! should i have lots of buckets to hold the corals and inhabs. should the rock also go in buckets. and then fill the buckts with his water?

now, what about setting it up at home? should i try trading in all the living stuff for store credit, and then start this tank, as if it were brand new.. you know, that whole "take it slow" thing ya'all are always yelling at me about :D and just keep the rock, sand and tank?

any input?

oh and i told him to send me a list of all the other stuf and prices he'd like, and i'll be happy to post them here at trt in the classifieds for him.

apparantly he has ot have the tank torn down by the 19th. who knows maybe he'll throw in some more stuff for me in the end :)

sheesh, now i gotta come up with 300 bucks !

What a deal!!:bigeek:

One of the club members moved to Hawaii last fall/winter and gave away all of his tanks. When we moved the big tanks (90 gallons) we removed the rocks/corals to buckets with tank water...fish to buckets with tank water and saved as much water as we could with the tank water. At the destinations, we had rubbermaids set up premixed salt water and powerheads and heaters. Transferred the critters/rock/etc to the rubbermaids. We picked up a sheet of plywood (I think) the size of the tank footprint and transferred the tank onto the wood to move it. This made the tank more stable, since we moved the tanks with the sand bed still intact. Then moved everything to the new location and set it all back up.

If you're not happy with any of the critters, now would be the time to get store credit. After tearing my tank apart last night to remove some evil bullies, I can tell you that isn't much fun.

You're getting a heck of a deal. Congratulations!

I recently moved my fully stocked 58 and 90. I lost no fish and only one coral frag.

Suggestion #1 Dump the Sand Bed. I kept mine in the 58 using a 3/4 sheet of wood to keep the tank from twisting. Me and the three other people moving the tank almost died moving it.

Suggestion #2 Beg Borrow And Steal every bucket you can. You will not have enough. I also used a 30gallon and a 45 gallon rubbermade tubs for the live rock.

Suggestion #3 Take every drop of water in the tank. With my 58 I moved it all and set it up in the same day with out any recycle.

Suggestion #4 Get as many reef friends as possible to help you move. As I found out normal people are not quite as useful.

I wish you the best of luck. After moving the apartment and one tank a day I was dead by the end of my moving weekend. Hopefully you will do better.

well, hewanted 1200 for the whole package. i'm taking the tank and inhabs for 300 i guess that leaves 8 for eveything else :) i think he's gonna send me a list of everything and desired prices. i wouldnt mind getting the lights off him too, but he's moving too soon, and i jsut cant shell out the cash yet. problem with running your own business is you never know just how much you'll have each week :(

as soon as he sends me a list, i'll let ya know.. on the other hand he is still trying to sell the whole package for 12. i told him do what ya gotta do. i'm interested on the 17th, but if you find a buyer for everything, go for it.. i think sometimes i am too nice :)

LOL...

well, i'll keep my fingers crossed for ya that he dosen't sell it over you and that you can find the cash for the whole getup if you want it.

i'd love to find a nice established setup for a good price!
it might take the fun out of stocking it yourself, but besides the fact of 'discovering' what all is in there that you didn't notice before, its the rearranging that i'd prolly do a LOT of!

Good Luck!

i'm definitly going to go for it. but i do think i'm gona turn in the corals and sponges, etc..

it would really defeat the purpose of trying to do it right, and slow this time. this way i can get the, tank established on my own. but it wil lsure be a good kick start having fully cured 3 year old live rock, and a good established sand bed to seed the southdown.

if i like many of the corals i may just have the lfs babysit for me for a few months :D then i can go visit my babies everyday and wont be tempted to buy any, cuz they'll already be mine lolol

plus i really want to take my time and do all the plumbing work the way i want it, and build a new stand and canopy etc... and if i trade in some of the living things for store credit, that would enable me to get a better skimmer and a better return pump, and who knows, maybe a pump for a cls aswell. then i can keep all my current equipment on the 55 as a fowlr.

we'll see, my fingers are crossed!

Jay,

Are you going to swap out the sand bed? If the tank is a few years old, it might be a great time to clear out some of the junk that accumulates in the DSB. If that's the way you're going to go, you'll definitely want to bring the critters in to the LFS for credit (or for holding if they will).

And don't forget the moving formula ;)

mine is pretty good. we have several here in town that are locally owned. i've bough things from him and then traded in for full credit even after a month or two.

when i first started goign there, i would spend hours just tlaking to him and looking at the tanks, before ever buying anything. and at the time i didnt even havea sw setup yet!

when i setup the 55, he loaned me 5-5 gallon buckets, a powerhead and some hose, for pumping it in. no deposit, jsut said here ya go, i trust you.

i've heard alot of negative things about them (from other stores) because they are new. actualy the store has been there for about 10 years, but the new owner just bought it in february. hes not hte most knowledgeable person when it comes to sw, but he now consults the "books" when everi havea question. and his store is really shaping up!

they also havea membership there. $30.00 for lifetime membership. gets you 20% off all sw fish and live rock. 10% off all dry goods.

when i bought the equip for the 55 it was 300 for wet/dry, skimmer, return pump, and salt. i got my 30 dollar membership, and saved 30 on the purcahse and wlaked still paying 300 bucks even :) lol

oh and my button colony that was dyign in my tank. he took that back for ful credit of what i paid.. towards store credit of course. but hey that was two weeks after buying them, and they were dying! dela was..if they live-full credit. if they die-no credit. they lived :)

Jay,

How long would it take me to drive from Philly?? Perhaps I'll take the drive up on a weekend and give ya a hand... Also get pricing on the list of other stuff he has available... It would make it worth my while if I could also get some stuff for cheap while I'm there...

yes i'm gonna swap out the sand bed for the southdown that jimmer picked up for me in wisconsin.

then i'm thinking i'll seed it with some of the existing sand.

ahh the moving formula.. can i substitute mountain dew and excedrine in place of beer, since i dont drink? :funny:
