building bacteria

I'm using fluval biomax rings (like bio balls) in my remora surface skimmer. I put them in the compartment where water is released back into the tank. My question is, will this help me build more bacteria for my tank or will it hinder it? I read a post that someone had bio balls in his or her filter for the tank and was told to remove them by other forum members. thank you!

heres a link to the product i'm talking about http://fishsupply.com/sheg-1456.html

The bacteria inhabiting the Biomax rings will produce nitrates just like using bioballs. It's not the media but the oxygen rich enviorment that allows the bacteria to flourish.
how do i know if my tank enviroment has enough oxygen for the bacteria? i have a protein skimmer and two power heads that point up to agitate the waters surface
You don't want the bacteria in the Biomax media. You want it to develop in the liverock.
i see, so it's pretty pointless to leave the media in there or will it still help filter the tank later?
please someone tell me....is using the fluval bio max in my remora suface skimmer beneficial or will it just sky rocket my nitrate levels?
sky rocket your nitrate levels. Its just going to cause algae blooms.
Sky rocket your nitrates as stated in post #2 jadinop knows his stuff. Remove it over a few days to allow the bactiria count to increase in the tank as you reduce the bacteria removing the rings.
just tested my nitrate and it is through the roof... thank you guys so much for your help. If it were not for this forum and you helping members. I would've left those rings in there and fighting a ever losing battle with nitrate. thank you guys!!!
since i will be slowly removing those fluval biomax from my surface skimmer compartment...that frees up a space to add some type of media..... what do you guys suggest i add in there to benefit my tank? i am starting to see some algae on the glass and went out to buy 10 astrea snails. i have a 40 gallon tank...will 10 snails do or should i add more?
No media needed. Liverock, good protein skimmer and routine water changes (RO/DI) are all you need for a simple reef tank.

Snails are important but they don't magically make algae disappear. They convert algae to waste (poop for lack of a better word) and you need to export that waste before it can act as fertilizer for more algae. Protein skimming and water changes are the key. Blowing off the rocks with a turkey baster or small pump prior to doing water changes will also help remove those waste products and keep the rock healthy.

Thank you Jadinop for your knowledge and help. You just saved me some money as I would've probably went out and bought some media to halt the algae growth.

Blowing on the rocks with a turkey baster is a great idea! up until now I have just been using the siphoning tube when I do water changes to suck up Sh** from the sand and rocks but notice i wasn't getting much when i moved to the rocks... anyways thanks again!!!!
