Have a merulina that's approximately 8x10". We've had it about 2 months and doing great until the last couple of days - has developed an area near one of the edges that is turning brown approximately size of a silver dollar - just to the right of the zooanthids on the picture (almost looks feathery/hairy but very short cropped) .

Any thoughts on what it may be and how to treat it?

We had it in a 75gal tank with T5's and moved it to the 180gal after we noticed the brown area. Lighting in 180 tank consists of 450W Halides and 384W of actinics. Nitrates were around 20 (but have been all along), everything else looks good.

If it is an algae, does that indicate that the polyps in those areas are dead? Is there anyway to correct the issue before it spreads or does more damage?

^^^^lol?? really??^^^^

 anyways, did this problem start after you moved tanks or before? it could be as simple as it not being used to that powerful of lighting, if so it will just take a bit (as im sure you know) to get acclimated but other than that i would have to say it might just be algae
