Just curious about this, not trying to add fuel to the fire. So I got some of that new salt, just because it was cheaper than IO blah blah blah. Well I did a 3-5% change 4 weeks ago. Sunday I did a bigger change (~10%) and today I noticed 2 of 3 shrimp missing! One amenome and one cleaner are AWOL. Just curious if people have changed to this new salt with shrimp in the tank. I'm not a happy camper!

i have heard many instances of tanks crashing due to people changing salts. i do not know exactly why. it does not seem to matter from which salt to which salt. my guess is that the animals seem to get used to having a certain concentration of trace elements, and when this is messed up they go into a kind of shock. very unscientific of me, but i am sure one of the big guns will have something to say.

now after saying that, the instances i have heard of mainly dealt with people having to do large water changes. not little 5-10% ones.

just a lot of hearsay though.

I have a little theory on that CS salt. I believe that the lack of EDTA"s (which is a binder of metals and other impurities) mean that all the metals and other toxins are readily available when you add this water to your tank. I believe that these Hot metals are burning the zoo's in folks coral and thus creating the bleaching events. I have not heard of this happening to a shrimp or a an anenome but it would sound logical. Bio assey salts are not a good long term solution in reef keeping, if you still have it I would swap back to IO.

I've read some of the threads and haven't seen anything about problems with inverts. Hopefully, they're molting due to the change and will come out in a day or two.

Not too sure about this CS salt either. The stuff doesn't want to dissolve easily- that doesn't sound good to me 'cause maybe it's just settling in the tank and bugging the corals. I'm sticking with IO until someone suggests a really good reason to switch. ;)

Yeah, and just buy the IO bags... I'm protesting against their crappy new bucket design. They are made of thinner plastic and very flimsy. Had UPS destroyed 7 buckets out of 12. And this is mainly due to their new bucket. This never happened with the old design.

Sorry Mike, saw your recommendation and had to vent.

Oh, I'm still using IO. Mainly because I switched once because I didn't have any left and cyno breakout. Coincidence??? Don't know, after switching back, the tank was back to normal.

Plus I have been using IO since 1985.

Again, dont get me wrong, I am not a big fan of Shimek's work and could care less if I can keep urchin embryo's alive but I got a good deal on it :). Yeah hopefully they are molting, but I am not holding my breath. I'll have to take a trip to aquatic discoveries and see if I can pick up some IO.
