I bought him for the sole purpose of eating my aiptasia(sp) but of course he hasnt touched it. If anyone wants him you can have him for free. Reply or PM me. Thanks.
hmmm ok i neeed to do some research they wont eat anything else will they? like polyps or something? i would take him off your hands are you coming to the meeting tomorrow?
Okay, ill give him a few more weeks. Maybe he'll decide he wants to eat them. Thanks for the help guys. BTW, Nishant the meeting is Tuesday, not tomorrow.
yeah i just relized that, but when iu spend the whole night in a room full of driunk teenagers older than you you start to lose track of time and where you are. specially since i jsut got back from new york city 3 hours ago.
I also though about not feeding him. If he's fat and happy on the silver sides he probably won't go for anything else. Hunger does wonders for makeing fish/inverts eat the bad stuff.
its been my experience with the peppermints you need a lot more than you think. i have thirty in my tank and they barely touch the stuff. but it hasnt spread since i introduced them. the bigger shrimp will eat it the tiny aips. the little ones dont seem to mess with it. i found this out by putting 5 huge pep's in my 55 and they mowed it down. i think it's a hit and miss type of thing with all these critters.
While you guys are on the subject of Peppermint Shrimp, can I get some advice? I would like to be able to raise a batch of them in my refugium. Has anyone had any luck? I have pregnant ones and would sure like to try.
So now what? The first batch that hatched in the refugium were getting sucked out into the main tank. So I put a sock over the overflow to try to filter the water flowing through and keep them in there. Didn't work well at all. Plus I think the momma might have eaten those that were left????? I found one research article that says the babies go through several molts as they develop and are considered "mature" around 40 days after hatching. Can anyone shed any light on this subject???
hmm, maybey try one of those little plastic hang on breeders in your sump. You can configure them a bunch of ways. I use mine to isolate new introductions to my tank, but you can set them up so that the eggs and fry fall into a separate chamber from the parent and they can stay there until they mature. I got mine for about $8. Pretty handy.
If noone else wants that pepermint shrimp, my Hawkfish says he'd like a snack.
Nicole: If you are serious about raising the pepperming shirmp you need to get the book "How to Raise & Train Your Peppermint Shrimp" by April Kirkendoll. It is a hobbyist guide to raising the shrimp from egg to adult. It's a small book that makes for some interesting reading as the author throws in some humor. They are not that difficult as they will eat artemia from the start. Time consuming though.
