is it ok to add to my tank a little coarser sand on top of the very fine sand bed I already have? It's a pain to clean and I'm not sure I like it anymore...i don't wanna screw my tank up so I thought i'd ask here first.

well you can, but i dont really suggest a coarser substrate. the problem is the grain size allows for more detritus and uneaten food to settle down in to it, then causing nutrient problems which can cause all kinds of algae problems and spikes in readings even. the more it collects the harder it will be to siphon out and remove. the finer sand doesn't let that happen and with a clean up crew, they are more likely to find it and eat it before it breaks down a lot.

if you want to change the size siphon out the old stuf first then add the new sand . make sure that you wasn the new sand alot as to not introduce anything that will cycle your tank.
