6ft Build

Hey everyone, some of you may remember i posted a while back about converting my dad's 6ft FW tank to SW. Well now plan's are in motion. Purchased 2 Vortech MP40W ES, a Super Reef Octopus SRT-2000 INT 6" skimmer, Maxspect R420R 16k 300W fixture and a Hydor ATO. Still waiting for some parts to come in but they have been purchased.

Next step is rock, firstly i was thinking of using nylon rod to keep the rock together, assuming ebay is the place to search for it but is there a recommended size i should go for?

My current tank will be moving into this 6ft so that includes a tomato clown pair, marine betta, large brittle starfish as well as my BTA & LPS. Fish wise i was wanting to add a Magnificent Foxface, Australian Harlequin Tusk, Powder Brown Tang, possible 3-5 Chromis' & maybe a bellus angelfish. Thoughts on whether this would be overcrowded/ compatibility, most of them are fairly peaceful, only the tusk might get a bit bossy but that's when they are adults so i don't plan on purchasing an adult tusk.

Besides this, ill keep this updated for whoever is interested.

lucky u.... i want a 6ft tank.... good luck!!!!
Thanks! if you ever get one just make sure you have the man power to move it cause they are heavy as or make it out of acrylic.
Yes heavy in weight. Our tank is 3/4" glass & 850 lbs empty.
Really PS.....you and how many buds?
It took six manly men to install our tank after using a bucket loader and forks to offload from delivery tractor trailer.
Nah. I move 6" tanks all the time.. No prob.
If I ever have to move my 7footer, you're getting the call.....ribs are always free at Hack's place for the working man! Took 5 of us to move this monster! Just got a giggle picturing a bucket loader trying to manuver around my house...
Dave
Ha....here's how it worked. Tractor trailer arrived from Montreal....tank was rolled to rear of trailer with pallet jack. [Never would have got it off manually.....there was the truck driver and me.]......and my Kubota 50/40/w loader and forks.

Strapped the crate to the frame of the forks....just to be safe...we're talking a $4,000 tank here.

That offload was easy......sent the driver on his way. Now had to rotate the crate 90 degrees so it was lengthwise on forks so we could fit it on deck behind house. that a bit of a challenge.......quite a bit of weight hanging off end of forks. Chain around far end...over the top of crate and used a come-a-long to stiffen chain.
On to the deck which is ~ 4' off ground. Had to remove side boards on deck so as not have to lift the tank over sides.

Easy peasee.....then remove crate top, end & sides, and set up an eleborate block and ramp set up to roll tank on side so it would fit through sliding glass door into living room.

It took just two of us to roll the tank 90 degrees onto its side and onto the platform I made with 3/4" plywood and 3 sets of casters likde they use in warehouses to move stacked boxes around. Casters were about 3". Manuvering the various blocks and sliding ramp material here and these was a PIA, but finally we got the tank in the house, closed the sliding door, and the tank sat up against that door for........5 yrs.
Got really busy with other things that life threw @ us...but then began installing in earnest
two winters back.

PhaneSoul's move sounds a whole lot easier than what we did. :)

Lmao all that work just to sit for 5 years.. I would've died having a big tank like that just sit..

& what can I say, our ribs make you strong ;)
so the skimmer came today, (bought on ebay, new of course, from a store in texas, parts are so much cheaper over in the US then AUS :L) anyway ordered a super reef octopus SRO-2000 INT got a super reef octopus SRO-3000 INT, so not complaining! invoice was for the 2000 funny enough but i'm not sending it back lol.

Just a question about filter socks, what micron rating would be better, 100 or 200?
Update

It's been a while but theres been quite a lot done.

So on the tank were just cheap led strips since it was FW so instead of throwing them we put them inside the cabinet so we got some light on the sump.

My dad wanted to put a coral backing on the tank  i told him plain blue or nothing so instead of getting a 6ft long backing we just got some paint and this is how it came out, not bad actually. [URL=http://s864.photobucket.com/user/Pitsta/media/IMG_1260.jpg.html]

So i tried cutting glass from a 2ft tank i bought for $10 to hold water for the ATO but that didn't work out (big fail) so asked around for places to cut glass, not even seal it just cut and they wanted $100. Went back to the guy who made out tank and he made this up for $50. [URL=http://s864.photobucket.com/user/Pitsta/media/IMG_1264.jpg.html]

Lastly for this update, the royal pain a.k.a adjusting the sump. So we ordered a SRO-2000 INT skimmer which would of fit in the 2nd chamber but instead they gave us a SRO-3000 INT (free upgrade  ) which just didn't fit so i had to pull the back panel off, take off the baffles between the first & second chamber and move them across by like 3cms. Half of my thumb is flat from pushing the razor blade between the glass to cut the silicon as well as not trying to break/remove the baffles between the 2nd & 3rd chamber plus all the cuts and bruising on my hands. Alas i got there in the end though, not bad for first time doing something like this. [URL=http://s864.photobucket.com/user/Pitsta/media/IMG_1263.jpg.html]

oooh pictures :) lookin good!
Thought pictures would make someone happy :p

Speaking of, last one for the day. So got this 220L barrel from the same guy i bought the 2ft tank off for $15. Drilled it so at the very top i can connect my RO unit to fill it then the two bulkheads with valves are so that the pump inside this barrel can mix up the salt when one valve is closed then i can close the other and open the closed one to send water to the tank.

such a small collection cup for such a big water holder :) yes I love pics and always post them when referring to my tank.
don't forget about your compression valve at the top there.. keep in mind tho, I hear its good to clean your mixing station tank once in a while
ahahah that cup had boiling/hot water so i could get the tubing around the thread :p

ill keep that in mind, it's not too hard to pull apart anyway
Update

Sump passed the water test  so happy considering it was a pain to do plus first time doing something like this.

That Time Again

Almost there! all the equipment is in besides the ATO part of things, waiting for our electrician family friend to come over to change the plugs from us to aus since it can handle 240V :) but everything else is here :D

just enough room underneath to remove the skimmer collection cup, phew

Looking good

A few small changes I would make are:

- Unless you're going to keep and anemone I would remove the mesh on the mp40. It will only cause issues as food will get stuck to it.

- I would remove the slack in the return line. Slack in the line only makes your pump work harder and will decrease your gph. Not to mention that it will probably get in the way eventually.

- Hard to tell by the pic but it appears you have tops on the tank? If so I would remove those. Having a top on the tank will hinder good oxygen exchange in the tank. Plus the evaporation will cause water drops on the tops and it will block some of the light from getting into the tank.

thanks for the tips, atm i have 2 nems since mine split in my tank so they will eventually be moving in there, hence why i decided to put them on.

The return pump is actually pretty strong, it's not so much slack but the way the tubing has to be for the return line to sit straight in the tank since it goes from the vinyl tubing to a hook shaped/ U-shaped pipe then right angles into a spray bar. I can get a pick of what im talking about, might be easier lol.

Yeah they are glass lids, i think i will remove them as some are chipped badly but light blockage isn't an issue, i turned on the razors and god **** they are bright ahaha
