while it is possible i think mh lighting would be best for a tank this size.

The article is over a year old. Moore's Law should be taken into account here.

OP is going to need focused optics and a well driven set of LED's. Mosty ready-made systems aren't going to cut it and en masse would cost too much to be effective in comparison to a MH setup, however if he can make his own LED system, it should far surpass MH in all fields including startup and running costs.

There's a multi-part series on YT regarding making an LED system from scratch. I believe it's from an author called "Ricket's Reef." It's a very simplistic/broken down way of how to purchase and wire LED's.

I realize the study was done over a year ago but as far as I know the were and still are the best that led has to offer. Granted the one is out of business.

Here is another study done on some other led fixtures a couple months ago.

As for par readings I think these are pretty close to what sanjay had, granted these numbers are a little higher then his test results but that is due to the height at which the fixture is Hung. With no heat being transferred the led fixture can be much closer to the water surface thus increasing the par levels. By the way these are the fixtures I will be using.

Of course you only need to fully penetrate the 48" if you have photosynthetic corals that low. Assuming you will have them on rock, you probably only need 36" penetration. (IMHO) and non photsynthetics will have enough light to look nice, (but target freeding 4'deep might be more fun to watch than to do.:clown:)

Have you tried contacting any of the LED manufacturers? They might be able to tell you better than anyone on here.

Personally I have Radions hanging about one foot above the water and and 29 inches of water to the sand bed. My LPS on the sand bed are thriving and the lights are not at 100% power.

i want to build a 1000 gallon reef tank. the dimensions are 8x4x4. is it possible that led lights will reach 48in deep in order to support the coral. what is the deepest the tank could be

A DIY 5Watt Cree would reach that depth.

awesome pic nate! you could try led cannons. ecoxotic has a 100 watt cann thats supposed to be pretty amazing. its dimmable too

Now thats cool. I saw another build with Solar Tubes, turned out crappy, everything was yellow as all get out, colors looked really bad. The one above looks really nice.

Radions will hit that depth..when I spoke with ecotech they reassured me that in my 40" deep I will have no issues with penetrating that deep..
