Check out this TV advertisement... I know its a ripoff but the concept is simple and effective. Vaccum the bottom of your tank by increasing the water level and therefor causing higher pressure and the siphon to form. Cool! http://www.asseenontv.com/my-fun-fish-tank/detail.php?p=605300

I just got my parts delivered today and going to add my first fish tonight after setting up the plumbing. My question: If I am going to have my returns too far under the water, or at heights that wont be predictable... how do I make siphon breaks in my return line? Just drill 2 holes about a...

I was wondering do you guys deep siphon your sand or just try to siphon the top? I heard conflicting information. Siphoning the sand releases trapped garbage in the sand bed and gets released into tank and makes nitrates and other bad stuff go up. My tank is 8 months old. Sandbed is only about...

A lesson for anyone with a siphon overflow.... I have a 20L with a 15g sump. Been running a couple years without any issues. I have a float switch in the main display that shuts off the return pump if the water level rises. I also have a float switch in the sump controlling the ATO. I do...

With spring in full swing, it may be time to give your aquarium a good spring cleaning! I won’t lecture you on the importance of regular tank maintenance. If you’ve been in the hobby for a while, you already know how important it is to stay consistent with aquarium upkeep. Today we’re here to...

Does anyone have recommendations on how to clean the outside chambers of the sump? I have an Aqueon ProFlex sump, with a live rock/ algae refugium in the middle. My issue is that I have some sand sediment on both the intake chamber and the final chamber (with skimmer and return pump). I have...

Just built my first sump. Its a work in progress and I have a couple of questions. To start off, 36g bowfront, hob overflow with a u-tube siphon. Soft hose running into sock in a 20 gal. No bulkheads (yet: thinking about how I want to perfect this.) Sat the return pump in a jar, so that if the...

So first question is can you cook sand like you do live rock? The reason I ask is that while I know sand isn't expensive I've been siphon a bit of sand while cleaning my sand bed. So instead of buying sand and cleaning it to put it in my tank was wondering if there were other options. 2nd...

Hi this is my first post i just registered to the forum. I bought a Nassarius from my LFS last Sunday and it buried itself in the sand after acclimation. I haven't seen it since. I have seen its siphon though. It just won't come out.
  13. The THINK Tank
my wife bought me a 90 tank (non drilled) for xmas. the problem is the stand, it will only allow 2 10g tanks to be stored due to a center brace. If I drill a connecting hole with a pipe and tie them together will a siphon still work? Or if u have design ideas let me know.

This is my first SW tank, i am used to large fresh water tanks. My natural instink is to vacume the sand and remove dirt and debre, however last night when I did it not much came up.... Is this a practice the SW tankers do?

I have a frag of Pulsing Xenia that I've had for just over a week now. Just 2 little stalks of it and it's been doing great for the past week. Yesterday I cleaned out my tank and while I was getting the siphon going, I ignored the end of the hose in the tank. When I looked up, I saw it sucking...

My sandbed is about one month old and I hate it. It needs to go, and it will get replaced by a larger grain size sand. It is only a month old, so releasing nutrients is only a big deal. Is there an easy way to remove a lot of it without removing a lot of water? I was thinking a recirculating...

ok. there has been a lot of cycling tank questions lately. lets talk about what "cycling" a tank is. some of this stuff obviously is in the Reefkeeping made easy thread, but lets keep this one focused on what is going on in the 6 months of a new system. lets try and keep this somewhat...

hello TRT, I bought a 180g aquarium off of a classified site:dance: and it has two holes drilled into the side with bulk heads and pipes turned down, on both the inside and the outside of the tank. my plan was to silicone a glass or acrylic overflow box around the 2 pipes and just leave it...

Just a question. I've been told a bunch of different things. Do you guys recommend siphoning the sand bed? How often? Reason I ask, is because I've been told not to, and if I touch the sand bed a brown cloud instantly emerges. Was told not to because of the good bacteria. Should I start? My...
