Hi, This is my 1st post, so thanks in advance to all responses! I am setting up a 30 gallon tank (I won it in a drawing at the the convention held at Red Lion this winter...a bit slow to get it going). It is an open tank, 24" (L) x 24" (W) x 12"(H), which I am going to set up so people can...

I am upgrading to a 75 gal. I want to put a sand base in the bottom of the tank. Any certain product I should use? Will sand from the beach work? Also trying to design my sump. I have a wet/dry sump that was on an old 120 gal and a 10 gal tank. I was thinking I could tie the two...

I am battling cyano and I was doing my daily removal of bad patches of sand. I took my hand out and smelled something funny. I smelled my hand and:bigeek:,the smell was terrible. It smelled like rotten eggs. Is this normal?

Hello reef heads. I have read somewhere on here that if your sand bed is old it no longer absorbs nitrates/phosphates...I have had my tank set up for approx 4-5 years. I added about 10 pounds of sand (not live) about a year ago because I was running thin due to some loss during water changes...

Hey everyone how are ya? I just wanted to know if it is okay to cure my rock inside of my new tank. I have a 55 gal with about 50 lbs of rock in there right now. My setup includes a pro clear aquatics wet dry with live rock rubble in the wet side, overflow set up, 220w PC's, 60 lbs of oolitic...

taken from this month's Coral Magazine: this new issue of Coral Magazine had an article about Deep Sand Beds and their uses and functions. It gave a pretty rough outline of an idea but to me it sounded extremely simple and cool. I believe the aticle was by Anthony Calfo. The proposed set up...

I'm looking for suggestions of brand/type/grain size to replace the top layer of my arganite bed. I have issues with detritus buildup and cyano/nasty growth in the deeper visible layers at the tanks edge. Is .5-1mm standard? I'd love the oolitic stuff, but figure that it'l make major sandstorm...

I'd like to take out & replace the top layer of my crushed arg. substrate. It catches too much detritus & grows some funky colors visible in the lower layers. What type/brand/grain size are people using? I have a 90g mixed reef with pretty good flow, but would like some finer substrate...

The Last thing I want to do is skimp on something really important for my tank but lately I've heard alot about hardware store sand being just as good to use, just have to make sure its calcium carbonate and not silica. Is this true, Has anyone else done this, I sure could save some $$$.

so i've been sisiting a couple of local fish stores, looking for a place to buy sand. since shipping on that stuff is insanely expensive. however, neither of the stores have dry substrate (sugar sized sand) they only have the small bags of "live sand" however, both of them had a BIG white bag...

So i am beginning prep on the tanks and i am torn on which substrate to use if any so i'll see what you think. there are 2 tanks and the stats are below 100gal-- will be used for coral and minimal fish 300gal-- shark tank, will be FO with agressive feeders and minimal LR the choices are...

I will be redoing my sand next week end. I bought three 32 gallon trash cans to put water in from the tank. Wow a little over $10.00 a piece. I also have several 5 gallon buckets. I am thinking of putting the fish in a 20 gallon tank that I have for a QT tank. That will make getting them back...

I have a 75RR with a 20g sump. I am intrested in building a closed loop for this system. I have no idea on what brand or what size pump i would need for my return pump from the sump. or what kind or what size pump for the closed loop. I will be purchasing a MR2 skimmer from MRC in the near...

I am moving my refug/sump to the garage. This gives me the opportunity to redo eveything. I no longer have to worry about what will fit under my main tank, a big plus. After reading eveything I can find about DSBs I believe I was in error in the past with a 5' DSB in my refug. I know it worked...
