We've been having some mysterious sps problems, with bleaching/receding from the base up and patches.
We found the culprit tonight. Asternia starfish munching away on an acro!!
Hope no one else has the evil evil adorable little munchers, if you do, find...
How do I assess issues with my SPS corals? What are the likely issues that I might see or are most common? I have tried to read a lot but there are still more questions than answers for me. I have ordered some of the recommended reading.
Would you mind giving me your feelings on the health...
hello. and im so excited to get a tank and get started.
i have a question. about how much is this tank pictured below worth? it includes the tank, live rock and some corals.... how much do u guys think its worth.. they told me they'll sell this set up for $150... good deal?

Hey Now Spanky,
I was doing some searching and found an old thread of good ways of running a softie tank. You mentioned that you would maintain a 1-2inch oolitic bed so you can get some denitrification and slow release of P.
Would you still run a softie tank this way?
I read just recently...
I have been inspired by the nano buildoff to do a nano tank! I already have a 55 gallon reef, but I also have a 37 gallon fowlr that I want to tear down and use the sand and rock for a nano.
The plan is to use a blue 5 gallon minibow aquarium that my sister is giving me. I have had small tanks...
Just running low on my salt inventory, and wondering what brands people use and why. I know people seem to like Reef Crystals & Instant Ocean, but why?
Originally I used some Red Sea salt that I picked up on clearance @ petco for $8 per 160 gallons. I used it to cycle the tank, etc before I...
This question hs probably been asked numerous times but I will be setting up my tank in the next week or so and am leaning towards going bare bottom. I would like to know if the members here that have bare bottom tanks are happy with them or wish they would have stuck with a sand bed?
Well since the hurricane its been hard getting control of my algae situation, I try trimming it back myself, water changes etc. and it just grows back. The water parameters look good.
I just need some advice, I don't want to start over I have some cool critters in there that made it through...
We have discussed the flaws with a dsb system. However I have seen little about the flaws inherant in a BB system. What do we feel are the problems associated with this tank system. Lets look at the other side of the current equation.
This should be a fun one. We have done this a while ago, but I think a lot has changed since the last time we talked about these.
What are these used for?
Do they do any good?
What is one?
How do you plumb one?
Wow the list goes on. :D
Well, its been two and a half weeks. The parameters are as follows
Amonia-0 to 5
Still have coraline and have seen a couple unidentified critters. Water is super clear. I siphon every day to every other day. and do water changes about 3 times a week...
Thank God for you guys. Seriously, that fat kid at the fish store has given me so much false advice. It started off with him saying my tank would get here in like a week, and it took 4. Then he told me that I shouldn't get a filter with my protein skimmer because it was bad, but you all told me...
What is this green, hairy algae and how do I get rid of it. It has taken over one piece of LR. I harvest it during my water changes, but it isn't doing much. My water parameters are normal, pH = 8.2-8.3, Alkalinity = 5.5 meq, NH3 = 0, Nitrites = 0, Nitrates = 5-10 ppm.
Any help is appreciated.
After a discussion on this board about a small compact flourescent light sold at home depot I went and looked into it. What I found is a 20 watt 6500K spiral PC light that screws into a regular light socket. I purchased a few and they are actually very nice. They put out a very nice crisp Ice...
Is there any rule of thumb for determining how much water should be going through a sump/refugium? Is it "the more the better"? I've got a 20 gallon refugium that has several rapidly growing macros that I harvest about every 3-4 weeks, and the refugium stays relatively free of unwanted pest...
My skimmer kicks butt! Its a custom job, and is rated for up to 250g tanks. I got her on a 55. This thing sucks everything out. The cap fills fairly quickly. Is it possible to over-skim and pull out important nutrients and plankton that the corals need? If so I can cut the foam down with venturi...
