I am getting more SPS and I have 2 clams (5 inches and 3 inches.) I am testing my calcium levels and they are dropping more than they used too, I am just adding Kent Marine Liquid Calcium to get the levels back. Do I or will I eventually need a calcium reactor?

My kh levels are now at 4 meq/L and my calcium reads 500 ppm. My Temperature is 78, my PH is 8.2 and my salinity is 1.026. This makes no sense to me as I thought a 4 meq/L reading shouldn't make it possible for the calcium to be so high. I have verified the reading with 2 different test...

Using my own inline RO/DI water supply. If have algae means have phosphates, then how do most you pro's eliminate phosphates? Water changes to bring out algae on glass faster after each glass cleaning. Have calc reactor, skimmer, etc... What is the secret to eliminating phosphates?

Hi everyone! I feel terrible that I haven't been on here in awhile....I miss Sunday night chat. I don't have ICQ or whatever darn it. Anyways, I recently added some new corals. My mandarin that's been semi-wasting away despite tons of copepods finally disappeared (had her for a few years) and...

Ok, I know that Magnesium and Calcium go hand and hand, Strontium is also somehow added as well. What exactly are all the relationships with the three, how do they work together and against each other?? What levels of each are going to be most beneficial and stable in a reef tank, and if one...
  7. General Reef Discussion
So, I'm wrapping up a year of having my AquaController and full-time pH monitoring. Throughout the majority of the year, my pH would swing from around 8.05-8.25, hardly every falling below 8 or above 8.3 in nominal conditions. When it did fall below 8, I knew it was time to replace my kalk in...

Is it necessary to do both of these things and do they complement each other or act against one another?? Why would one do both? as i continue to stock my new 180 I plan on dosing homemade 2-part to maintain cal, alk...but I see where some people also still dose Kalk along with the 2 part...can...

My PH is always up high. 8.8 usually. (Source is like 7.8 ???) Should I be trying to lower this? I add calcium, purple up sometimes, but no PH/ALK buffer of any kind. These typically raise PH or ALK, don't they? My ALK is usually high too. About 9-10 range now. Was staying at about 11-11.5...

ok guys & gals I got my mrc calcium reactor where do I start im getting the bottle filled today....the reactor was sent to me with the media already in it used (will this hurt anything)??? any help appreciated....I have a ph monitor also with the system...I think this is a mrc1 reactor....
  12. The THINK Tank
One reason to have fluctuation in our tanks and to not shoot for all stable parameters. I have always thought that my daily temp swing of 2-4 degrees could be helpful in helping corals survive an enviornmental stess. I had a temp spike about 2 months ago where we had a warm day and I had...

OK - quick chemistry refresher please! (And this is only while I go and chase up some of Tom's missives...) The tank started up back in august this year. KH started at around 130 mg/ml (7.5), and has crept down to 110 (about 6.6.5) and now tonight when I checked my params down to 90 (about 5)...

Well, I finally had some spare time so here it goes. I pulled out most of my LR. I have about 200lbs total. I didn't pull out a few that had mushrooms, anenome etc. on them that I didn't want to fight with. I wanted to read up on the LR cooking thread again when I got a chance. For now, I...

I'm under the impression that the majority of fish in the ornamental trade are juiced(caught with cyanide) and are doomed to die within weeks or months. But for argument's sake lets say it's 50/50. That means that at least 50% of fish in the trade are lemons? As an economically conscious and...

ok so i got this reef calcium stuff and it says to add 1 teaspoon per 40 gallons, my tank is only 10 gallons. im trying to figure out how much to add. is it a 1/4 teaspoon per gallon??? :arg:

OK WTH!!! I mess with my alkalinity, and my calcium drops. I mess with my calcium and my alkalinity drops. Now both powder additives arent supposed to mess with the other. Here is the weird thing though. If I dont touch my tank, my calcium stays steady at around 440 and my alk at around 2.60. I...

Seems like everytime i do a water change with my top off water (distilled) it effects my alkalinity, should i buffer my top off water to get it to a good alk, i think the top off is 80mg/l but my tank water is like 200-300mg/l i think or meg/l or whatever just wondered if anyone else does...
