Hi Folks, for a few weeks now I have had a particulate matter floating in my tank. From a distance, the tank looks cloudy, and up close you can see tons of stuff in there.
I made a quick video and stuck it on Youtube - hopefully that saves me having to inaccurately describe it (I need to re-do...
Since upgrading to my 100g I've used a variety of phosphate controller elements in my tank. For a while I placed Purigen and charcoal in the filter sock and recently added Chemipure Elite...only to see corals like Zoas, Kenya, Xenia, and Gorgonians have a variety of mostly negative reactions...
So my handy wife sewed me up some DIY filter socks. All I can say is THANK GOODNESS!! I can hear my television again!! (tank is next to couch). I had solved my micro bubble problem with a reverse durso before but not the sound of water rushing into the first chamber of the sump. Sooooooo...
So my drain pipe is a PVC pipe that drops down into a rubbermaid tub. I'm making a contrapment out of an egg-crate sheet to hold the filter sock into place.
How far down inside the filter sock should the PVC pipe go?
My sump is in the basement. Its a 100g rubbermaid tub. I have two 2" drain lines dumping into the rubbermaid sump, vertical straight down into the rubbermaid.
I'm wanting to start using filter socks on both drain lines, BUT since the rubbermaid sump isn't square all the filter sock holders i'm...
Considering DIY filter socks for new 155G. I found 100% polyester felt at Walmart for $4/yd. At that price I can make 4x12'' socks for $0.50/pc
Any opinions on whether it is reef safe? Google results come back with quite a few people doing this but can't find any previous discussion on TRT...
Good morning TRT!
As the title indicates I have an orange filter sock. I am using Dr G's phosphate and silicate remover. Completed a water change yesterday and removed the phosphate remover from a filter sock. Rinsed it well and placed in a new filter sock. This morning, I noticed the filter...

I have a 90 gal reef with a 30 gallon sump, skimming with a 65 gallon rated skimmer for now. Running two reactors, one carbon, one GFO, Wavemaker, reef rubble in sump, bubble trap after skimmer, 4 inch filter sock on return, larger sized sand than in previous tank, in hopes of keeping suspended...
I'm in the process of setting up my plumbing and a debate has occur within the club i'm in. Where do you put your sock? At the end of your drains, or at the end of your skimmers. Whats the relevance?
I for one ; i paid my dam skimmer $500, so i'm going to let it skimm his little heart out...
I have always used a filter sock for the overflow line in my sump. When I first started out I didn't change and clean it regularly and had high nitrates and algae issues. It was hard to get to and I overlooked it.
I've of course learned the errors of my ways and it gets cleaned ever 2-3...
Hello. I am about to start my 30g IM AIO tank. On the backside I want to have carbon and a mechanical filter on one side and a filter sock on the other. Any ideas how to add a filter sock to this? should I just make my own holder, and silicone it too the side? or is there a kit for nana AIO tanks?
Loads of debate about this I know. Am planning my sump.
Yes or No?
As far as I can tell -
gets loads of detritus out
another thing to maintain - some say daily changes!
nitrate factory if not changed properly
need washing etc
takes up room in sump
As far as cleaning the filter sock goes, since we're new to this whole sumo thing, should we take out the sock and clean it and rinse it, or buy a whole new one? If so, how often should this be done?
You guys have been a huge help, sorry for all the questions :/
I am working on my 29 gallon right now and adding a 10 gallon sump. The main reason I am making a sump is to house my skimmer and get rid of the micro bubbles before it gets back to the tank. Now, with this being a limited size (10 gallon) I was wondering what your top 3 are for keeping the...
