Ok, so I am "allowed" to use my 180 in the living room. We've decided that the living room carpet can be sacrificed :) I've cleaned out the tank, here is a "before" picture. I'll have to reinforce the stand and fix the canopy to open in the front. (stand and canopy I'm going to use aren't in the...

Is there some kind of a record for the most moves of a 180 in a short time? If so, I want put my name in the running  We bought a small house on a small lake in June (a repo in need of lots of work) and sold everything living from our tank and some equip. Now we're planning on setting the...

Im in the process of putting up a 55 gal reef tank, and have had people tell me that a bb (bare bottom) tank is a better choice than having sand since there is less maintenence. I want to put a 1 1/2-2" deep live sand bed but before i do i would like to hear what everyone thinks about bb.
  4. Substrate Free Tank Husbandry (Bare bottomed)
I shut down my 180 DSB 1.5 ago. I am starting back with a 120 gal that I am going to try BB. If you were starting again would you go BB? I will have pleanty of flow (3-6101 Tunze's). It was great to find this forum. Thanks Larry

Ok so i am buying the 75g AGA reef ready next week and although I am buying the peices I need over time I want to know what I am doing before hand. I am tossed on the BB or DSB. I DO NOT EVER EVER EVER WANT TO HAVE TO REDO THIS TANK BECAUSE OF A CRASH OR ANY OTHER REASON. Ok I am calm now...

After I had ordered the sand (but before I put it in) I looked in the tank and thought that it looked good bare bottom. But then I figured, since I have it I have the sand I may as well put it in. So here I am looking at it again and thinking about bare bottom again. What are the...

Im just curious. I have long erradicted any gsp from my systems but in the process of trying to get rid of it I witnessed the crap live through rock cooking for many months(not in a oven ;) ), and absolutely covering them in kalk paste out of the water. covering them in kalk paste out of the...

What do you guys use for the substrate in your SPS tanks? I REFUSE to go bare-bottom. I just don't like the look. What about a coarser substrate? I would like something that wont be a sandstorm...
  9. Substrate Free Tank Husbandry (Bare bottomed)
So i upgraded tanks and went with a 75 gallon and decided to try this bb. I cut 1/4" plexi and used it instead of the starboard. I did not silicon it down and now i have detritus getting underneath it. I just spent about 2 hours reading all the old threads and have seen that some of you pulled...

Running a FSB is pretty much the same as bare bottom Correct? If so, from what I have been reading lately, :read: when running a BB tank you should reduce the lighting in the tank because of water clarity. SOOOO if I go with a FSB with (1) 250W MH with T5 suppliment on a 90 gal tank...

As many of you have undoubtly read by now, my 180 crashed about 6 weeks ago. So far, it seems to be recovering well. The inital cyano bloom has gone and been gone for about 3 weeks now, and the hair algae bloom seems to have subsided now. I can only find a few patchs of hair algae and those seem...

What's a good cleanup crew for a predator tank? Can I have things like hermits, turbo snails, cleaner shrimp, or will they just be lunch for a fish?

So in a couple-few weeks I am going to switch over to a 125. I havn't decided and I am torn about what to do about the bottom. I am kind of leary about using my current sand which is 200lbs of SD. I'm scared of mixing it up and releasing any toxins that may be present and killing off things...
