  1. General Reef Discussion
Hello all! I'm currently on a build for a 50 gallon caribbean reef octopus tank and i want to know what would be the best external pump to not only add flow to the display ( only flow because i do not want to put circ pumps in display in fear of the octopus getting caught in the props) , but...

Hi, I am 18years old just graduated from high school and am attending college to study marine biology come fall. I got into the saltwater hobby just over a year ago, with a 50gallon tank with built in sump that my uncle had given to me along with a 48inch jebo light fixture that used 4x55watt...

I'm in the planning phase of my new 250gl, and I'm not up to speed on all the latest toys and gadgets. Especially where flow is concerned. I hope TRT can help me out with this. There will be several large anemones in the tank, so I really don't want a bunch of power heads or moving parts. I...

I may have asked this on my build thread but I'm not going to go back through that blabber fest! My wife just ran the power for the tank. I will run the system with two 20amp circuits. I wanted to see what everyone thought would be the best way to separate equipment on the two circuits. Here's...

Well, who am I kidding? It was bound to happen so why resist? Over the last few months the wife and I have talked about what would be my summer project this year since she knows that I HAVE to have something to occupy my time otherwise insanity sets in. I told her that my plan was to teach a...

I've just recently scored a deal for a used 1 year old IWAKI WMD-40RLT for $65 plust $20 shipping... not bad for my first external pump- I think anyways..... I plan on using it for the return from the new sump that I'm going to be building within the next month.. It's all in my overall...

You know - I am still debating on the 28G Nanocube or a bigger tank. I know I wil lget bored of the Nanocube eventually since it can only house maybe 2-3 small fish and a few corals. I confirmed the electrical issue will cost allot to do and its probably out of the question. With a TV, DVD...

Hi guys, I am setting up a 180 gal with a 75 gal sump underneath. I am not sure if I should go with a Sequence Dart or a Gen-X Mak4 for my return though. The dart would be running about 1700 gph with head loss and the Gen-X about 1000 gph after head loss. What would you guys go with? I was...

It's been forever since I posted in here but since I took over the buisness I've just not had enough time to dedicate to this tank. There are a bunch of nice things in this tank that are fairly expensive. I'd like to sell the whole thing to one person cause we all know that parting out a reef...

I am contemplating saving for a 120G setup (48x24x24). My guess is the following. 120G Oceanic ~$1000 Stand - $500 Light - $1000 sump - $300 pumps (inc power heads) $400 misc (heaters, probes) $300 LR - $700 Sand - $200 So ~$4400 without adding a coral, fish, salt, additives, etc Is this right?

Just wanted to see what everyone's preference was in regards to return pumps before I drill my sump. So what are the pros and cons of in sump verses external and which do most prefer?

I have been a long time reader, but this is my first post at TRT. I previously owned a 14gal Oceanic Biocube that I enjoyed with two maroon clowns and some softies. I loved the tank and the hobby, and wanting a larger tank so I can finally put in some bigger fish. I want a 75gal or 90gal tank...

I’m ditching my Berlin skimmer but what to buy to replace it? My tank is a 75g with a 55g sump but I plan on getting a 48” 120 within the next year or sooner, so the new skimmer needs to be the last one I buy for a long time. I’m looking on spending under $500.00 and I’d like it to fit in the...

OK I know some of you thought it was sacrilege that I tore my 450-gallon system down. Numerous issues compiled and aided in the decision. First off was the system itself. I think anyone who builds their first dream system will tell you that a lot more thought went into building it than...
