denitrifying bacteria

When I clean my sponge filters, I use salt water. Why? Because I don't want to kill off the bacteria. Is that REALLY neccessary? Would washing off with cold tap water REALLY kill off the bacteria? Or is this an old wives tale? Any evidence in either direction?
