Haha, oops. Took to long to attach the poll it seems. That’s what I get for multitasking at work. Well here is the actual poll for those who want to play along. -AR

Hi, I was in the hobby about 20 years ago so most of my knowledge is dated. I'm setting up a 10 gal nano tank for my daughter and would like to know if a bare bottom tank is the best for a healthy tank. It will have lots of live rock, one fish, some cleaners and easy care corals. Tank you.
  4. General Reef Discussion
I'm feverishly researching for my 185G build (Thread Here) and am/was planning a faux sand bed. However, pretty much all the pictures of good looking tanks I find online have substrate. Almost all the youtube videos of good looking tanks have substrate. Most of the time I read posts discussing...

I have a bit of dilema. I like the theory behind and easy maintenance of a BB tank but I really like burrowing animals. I know that jawfish do not accept pre-made burrows but that shrimp gobies (and their shrimp partners) do accept them. Could I use a FSB (like the one in this link...

Hey there guys and gals (and those who identify as neither I suppose as well). It's time to start my 75 gallon build thread; I've had this plan in the back of my mind for the last 6 months or so. Last week I donated my last African Cichlid to the LFS who I trust to take good care of him; I...

Lets discuss the recommended way to setup a Reef tank. Lets discuss what LFS recommend, and what you would recommend to somebody just getting into the hobby. What are some aspects that are easily overlooked when setting up a new system? G~

Well, it has been nearly 5 years... (shesh, I did my doctoral work faster, seriously!), but I have my 120g back from storage and ready for water! It went to my in-laws in May 2011 for the move to DC, then I moved back to NC, and then a few more years before I could get it back. It also serves as...

Hey guys and girls, I have 2 questions I need answered. First, in the attached pics is this byropsis or just normal green hair algae? It's really thick and almost impossible to pull out. Second, I see a lot of pics of people with bare bottom tanks. I also have a bare bottom tank, but would...

Hey guys my 45 gal is cycling and i want to cover the whole bottom with mushrooms (bb tank) I feel like its perfect they will be at the bottom right where they want to be in the dirtiest part of the tank and it will cure the old "the glass it's ugly and un-natural looking" thing Any reason why...

Good morning all, about a month ago I was adding a new bag of sand into my tank to increase the sand bed a little. First bag ( two x 10 lbs ) went in no problem. Little cloudy but took time to minimize. Second bag while marked sand actually had not only sand but crushed coral mixed in. Needless...
  12. Substrate Free Tank Husbandry (Bare bottomed)
I'm not a huge fan of the sort of light dusting of detritus that seems to stay attached to the bottom of my tank despite aggressive turkey bastering. I've been looking for a good way to keep the bottom glass clean. so far the best I've been able to come up with is to get the end of a marina...

I had to break down my old tank due to relocating to another state. I sold off all of the old equipment, was a sad day indeed. Well, thanks to another member on these forums, I purchased a tank he no longer had need for. So, I am off on another 75 gallon adventure. This one will be a bare...
  14. Tank Specs
29G bare bottom + 10 gallon sump + large skimmer build hey guys, I created my self introduction thread earlier and figured i would copy my tank specs and water parameters over from that thread: photos of tank in this thread:
  15. The THINK Tank
Check out this TV advertisement... I know its a ripoff but the concept is simple and effective. Vaccum the bottom of your tank by increasing the water level and therefor causing higher pressure and the siphon to form. Cool!
  16. Substrate Free Tank Husbandry (Bare bottomed)
Hi, I just started the cycling process for my tank and I plan on going BB. I'm not an experienced reefer yet, so I was wanting to seek advice from those who know their stuff. What do I need to know about going BB, benefits, issues, is it really better than sand beds, etc. Thanks in advance!

  18. La Crosse Area Reef Keepers (LARK)
I have started a new tank. No build thread because it's kinda already built. It's a 36 gallon bare bottom. 30x18x16. I have 40 lbs of brand new live rock(still cooking), 2 Jebao wp25 on the twin controller, AquaMaxx hob ConeS CO-1 protein skimmer. I might add a homemade refugium in the future...

I pulled the canopy off my glass 50 yesterday to find that the center plastic frame was splitting and when I eyeballed the front glass from the side I could see it bulging out in the center. :freak: My first thoughts were to check craigslist and :rimshot: there happened to be a guy selling a 55...
