For purposes of this discussion the following terms are used to describe certain things: Live Rock: This seems to be self-explanatory but it will include any DIY rocks, any type of actual rock that is used in a tank for a surface for the bacteria to live on. Wet/Dry media: This includes, but...

These are the foods and supplemtents I use. I use a seringe with a .5mm dull tip to direct feed. It works quite well. The coral accel I just do a squirt into the left side of my tank I dont use the suringe for that.

After my next water change I will be putting my substrate down. I have a couple of questions. I am going to use CC I know some people say its terrible but i like the look and I dont mind the vaccuuming during water changes. Is there any one here who uses CC in there REEF setup? Here are my...

Ok so my tank has been up for about 9 months now. Its doing great, but I only have one complaint. When I first setup the system, I spent about $400 on 3 nice peices of rock. The rock is wonderful, and full of life. However, I needed more rock at the time so I ordered crap rock from Dr. Fosters...

Hi all- A question on Nitrates- I have 2 HOB filters- both have filter pads in them- one of them had a bio wheel- I removed the biowheel about a week ago- I still have some nitrate issues- brown film on the sand and live rock- the tank is about 2 years old- I've been doing 30% water changes...

Anyone want to take a stab at the nitrogen cycle and denitrificaton? I noticed, among a lot of other things, that the hobby explanation is not accurate at all. (you can't quote hobby references ;) )
  14. The THINK Tank
I've had my phosban reactor running for about a month now with a light bioload. Some observations is that my sps corals started bleaching out and stopped growing. I had only one fish in the tank. Also algea growth stopped almost completely. I've come to the conclusion that my tank was too...
  15. The THINK Tank
On a recent trip I made to Miami, I had the chance to visit several LFS…….. I was really impressed with the reef tanks they had, but I was more impressed with the fact that most of them were running wet/dry filters. We are talking of some huge aquariums completely filled with corals and no signs...

Hi all, I've been reading threads all around the net, on various boards, and time and time again I see people damning wet/dry filters because they are "nitrate factories". While I acknowledge that there are cheaper ways to sump it, and that for some, nitrates can become a problem when such a...

Yesterday I got home from work and noticed these little black things on these zoanthids. I'm not sure what it is, but they are all getting it and aren't opening. It's not a nudibranch, I know cuz I haven't added anything since I put these in my tank a month ago. The water params are: Ammonia: 0...

I need help - i checked my nitrates friday and they where extremely high - everything else was fine (although my ph was a bit low but i know how to fix that) I have a 60 gallon tank and changed out 15 gallons of water and also added some coral sand for a deeper sand bed. With that said - i...

With all the talk lately with DSB not standing the tests of time. What are the chancves of evolving to back to the plenum NNR systems. I never really heard anything bad in regards to them other than DSB were easier to set up. At the time it was a no brainer. I have a plenum that was set up...

Exactly what kinds of phosphates will be found in a DSB? Some are stable, some not. Some are available, some not. Some need help breaking down, some don't.
