For those who have been helping me out thanks. I have bought a 40 gallon breeder 36"x18"x16". I have decided to go with the aquac remora pro. Now its been lighting that has been my concerns. I am thinking of going with 1 250 watt 6500k metal halide and two vho actinics in a icecap/pfo on top of tank fixture with two fans installed. I will raise the fixture 6 to 8" off the tank by attaching peices of wood to the ends of the fixture. I was worried about heat in such a small tank. Do you think this will work? also I was not sure if I should go with (1) 175 or (2) 175 or (1) 250 watt mh lamps what do you think. I am worried that a 250 might burn some of the corals considering my tank is only 16" deep. they say you need 250's for over 24" tanks if they are rest on the top fixtures.

Thanks for all the help for those who have been following me thru this.

Hey Dave,

Welcome to the board, didn't see you sneak in- shame on me. How do you pronounce that city your from?

MH lights usually only cover a 2ft area, but if you get a perpendicular mounted reflector ( ie. spiderlight) you should get pretty even lighting across the 3ft length.

depending on what you want to keep, you may want to start out w/250w , heat shouldn't be a problem..... lots of people have 2-400w on 75gal tanks , you just need to have a fan blowing across the water surface.

BTW you mention you have kept reefs a few years back, some thinking has change over the last year or so on what temps to run a reef at. If you do a search on most of the boards you may be suprised that temps between 80- 84 seem to be the average.

hey again!
just to ease your mind on the lighting being too strong on your tank- my 75 gal I have 2 400 watt halides, 4 110watt vho. yes, there is some heat, but with a small fan running durring the time the vho's are on, and a more powerfull 4" muffin fan blowing when the halides are on, there are no probs. as for light, 1 250 watt on you tank, esp. mounted on one end will give you a great photo-gradient for adding lower light critters, as well as aclimating new clams, sps, etc. to the higher light.

sounds like you will have a great setup- enjoy!

Just thought I would give you an insight to the MH bulbs I use.
I find these BLV bulbs great check them out Better than most of the other bulbs I have tried IMO.
This medium-sized enterprise is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Japanese group USHIO Inc., Tokyo.

The company's view.
10000 Kelvin
The metal halide lamp with 10000 Kelvin (cool-white) was designed specially for acquaria. Because of a patented construction the colour of 10000 Kelvin remains constant throughout the whole lifetime. In deep-sea aquaria light conditions can be simulated equal to those found more than 5 meters below the surface of the sea. As most of the red light gets filtered out you receive a very natural impression of the underwater world, even with a low depth of the aquarium. The smaller portion of green light reduces the growth of algae. Corals for instance need blue light not only to maintain their colour but it is partly vital to their existence. 10000 Kelvin cool-white can turn a swimming pool into a dream of the South Sea with deep, clear sea water. Last but not least it can give the sale of seafood optical support. Fish on bluish glittering ice appears fresh and appetizing. The 10000 Kelvin cool-white can be obtained in the double ended version in 70, 150 and 250 Watt.

The single ended version is available in 400 and 1000 Watt.

We have a branch of BLV in the UK.
All my 42 BLV bulbs from 150w to 250w to 400w = 10000k are supplied by the UK Branch. http://www.blv.co.uk/homepage.htm http://www.blv.co.uk/company.htm
BLV UK Branch
BLV UK Branch was formed in 1992 to service the British market place. Aylesbury was chosen as the area most central for distribution throughout the British Isles, and with good stock levels of all lamp types it was soon apparent that the name of BLV would become synonimous with quality of service as well as quality of products. In 1996, the branch gained certification to ISO 9002 in its own right and this, in conjunction with the parent company's ISO 9001 certificate, gave it the status demanded of the industry today.
