I have a 30 Gal tank that I have just started cycling (6 small Damsils per lfs recomendations). I am wondering (for future reference) how much live rock to put in when my levels work out??? Also should I add it all at once or little by little?????

30 gal tank with 4" sand/crushed coral bed
penguin 333(dual) bio wheel filter (from an established tank)
and a Magmun 350 (w/bio-balls)

Also do I need to rid myself of the bio-balls??

Hi there!! They recommend 1lb-11/2lbs LR per gallon of water. I would put in 50lbs LR for added filtration. I would put all the LR in at once and let it cycled and be done with it.
I would get a real good protein skimmer and get rid of your other filter system.
I have about 100lbs of LR and 20lbs of Tonga rock in my 80 gallon reef tank. I have a Remora Pro hang-on skimmer and a DSB of 5-6" and lots of water circulation and my tank does great. Have fun with your reef. Johnny

Your LFS has helped you create a tank based on 5-10 year old practices. You should dump the bio-balls and get rid of the crushed coral in you substrata as well. Take a look at these threads and if you decide to make the changes, it will be easier now than later.

The tank you were guided into by LFS is fine for a fish only, actually its a higher tech approach based on methods used in the mid 70s when I got in the hobby. However if you are looking to establish a reef system, redo it now and follow CWA suggestions. BTW 6 chromis are close to max load for a salt water tank that size,IMO
