I was just wondering why people dont tend to favor the Rio pumps. Rio's seem to be the most widely available in my area and I am currently using three 2500's in my two tanks and haven't had any problems. I have found them to work well for me they seem to push a lot of water and seemed reasonably priced at $50 dollars each at the LFS. What experiences have people had with them?
Some, not all of the Rios have had a problem with seizing, overheating and meltdown releasing noxious stuff into the tank environment. When this happens, a whole tank can be lost(happened to several people) I dont feel its worth risking the investment in invert lives and the money I have in my tank
Hi!! I have heard the horror stories too about RIO pumps and it does bother me. Presently I have 3 RIO pumps also, 2 in my tank(RIO 2100) for circulation and 1 on my Remora Pro Skimmer.
The 1 RIO 2100 in my tank I have had for over a year with no problems(cross my finger when I say that)but maybe some where down the road I will have a different set-up for water circulation and different pumps. Johnny
Here's an archived article about Rios. The last time the topic was discussed there was some excellent info put forth on the manufacture of Rio pumps posted by tdwyatt. I'll need to go back and do a search for that one but here's the archived article, it's a start. http://www.thereeftank.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=6&t=000025
I recently got rid of my Rio, I had it for almost a year and it started makeing some bad grinding noises so I decided to replace it before I became another statistic.
Wow after reading all that I think I will probably replace mine. Maybe I will put them in my FW tank for circulation where they never would have a chance to run dry, but probably not I think I'm scared of them now. Thanks for the info as always.
