This is my DYI self sump. Got the plans from LarryM and did some mods my self. I put sand in the sump after I put two 6 inch walls. To keep the sand out of the pump. After a few months started to see life in the sand and it became more and more life. So I decided to put some micro alge in the sump. Thing are going good want to know what everyone thinks. The guy at the LFS thought I was crazy.
hey frank-
sump looks great!
The LFS guy thought you were crazy? Hmmmmm....
I did nearly the same thing with my 30 gal sump- the middle is the sand/macro/refugium, reverse lit it with a 55 watt PC, and it works great.
Looks great Frank. I put some feather calurpa (sp) in my sump, but it's not doing nearly as well as yours. I figured it would help absorb excess nutrients and preveng algae. So far it has. What are you using for lighting over the sump?

Yeah, the feather caulerpa in my tank didn't do well either. I would suggest trying razor caulerpa instead... it's a lot hardier then the feather variety, seems to need less light (IME) and doesn't got sexual on you near as much as the feather caulerpa likes to.
