Looks like mine at night when the lights go out. They also go through pouty phases where they dont extend polyps for days and shed a waxy coat. Use the baster to blow it off and it will come around
The **** thing is leaning over. The stalk is becoming shortened. At the tank at the dealer it looked as if it was reaching for the light. When I put the coral in my tank it started to shrink, but still opens up. It's loosing size day by day.
I have two bulbs:
(1) 30W 36Inch Coralife 20K
(1) 30W 36Inch Coralife Actinic O3 Blue
I don't think the lighting is the problem. I have no Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite, and my pH was at about 8.3 last time I checked (this morning). I feed him some phoytoplankton every other day, in the exact amount that the dealer uses (in respect to a 46gal). I was told that I could have some metal in the water that could be irriating the coarl: iron, copper, etc.
Should I get a RO machine to produce pure water for my tank? Could that solve my probelm? I used tap water for my tank, added some chemicals to clean the Chlorine & Chlorane. I let it sit for about 2 weeks before I added my sand. Then a week later I added 20 pounds of live rock. A week later came 2 clowns. What the hell is wrong with that coral? I just want it to be happy and grow.

I bought it attached to a rock about two inches long. It is attched to that rock very firmly.
Prop it up agianst a rock? But why is it loosing it's "strength." It's becoming weaker and weaker every day. The first day I brought it home it could stand up by itself, and now the cap is touching the sand.
My SG is 1.021 is that too low for inverts?

I don't know why. I wish you luck with it.
Maybe move it up closer to the lights. There's nothing to lose by trying. I had to move mine around a few times before it opened and got comfy.
Blake,
How long has the tank been setup now? I gather it is pretty new.
Toadstools are pretty hardy but can be sensitive to water conditions, particularly after being introduced into a new tank. If the tank was maturing, say at least 6 months, I would say that it should adjust but in a very new tank, it is subject to doing poorly. The brown stuff on the stalk is probably algae but should have no effect on the coral unless you start to see it on the crown and polyps.
I don't believe there is enough light for the coral to do very well. Sarcophyton spp. don't demand intense lighting but IMHO, 60 watts of NO lighting in a 46 gal. tank just isn't enough for the coral to flourish and grow. You really do need to upgrade to at least VHO or Power Compact lighting if your corals are going to do well.
As for source water, RO water would be a big help for your tank. Tap water, though dechlorinated, can have phosphates, minerals and lots of other stuff in there that affect water quality. At least get a Tap Water Purifier deionizer so you don't have to add the dechlorinating chemicals and DI water is quite good.
Please tell us some more about your setup: filtration; skimmer; temperature; Ca; Alkalinity; salinity; water flow; etc.

Hi Blake
I also tried to post but anyway here goes again.
I also have leather umbrella during the day it is 6" tall and even at night at times but on occasion he shrinks to if you can belive it about 3"
1 How long has the leather been in the tank?
2 Is it getting a good current?
3 when did you do your last water change?
I don't know if this will help or not but over the time I have had mine, when he was not happy I would do a water change this seem to perk him up and I noticed a diff. the next day.
Also mine came attached to a very small rock but the rock could not support his size he kept falling over and it irritated him so I did as windwalker has already suggested.
(prop him up between some rocks)
I had a bugger of a time to get him to attach to any other rock in fact he rolled around on the substrate for a day
so I left him in the rock work and propped him up and he latched on weeks later, then the base went black and green.
The color of the base is still a BLK/green were it latched on,to this day.

mini mee
ps I hope to post some pics this weekend,I will make sure I get a pic of the base.

It is ironic that you said they are sensitive to water conditions.
I was thinking the same thing b/c my leather has been a great guide in letting me know when I need to do a unscheduled water change
