Smallpolyp was more to the point, but you never did say how much LRand sandbed you have in the tank. We should have pressed the issue more before voting to remove them. If your readings are right I would say there isnt enough LR to take over filtration. If you havent already put them back, hopefully somethings salvagable. We really need more info on your tank setup

I dont advocate holding marine creatures for ransom but......since you asked:)

Anthony,
Sorry you are having problems but I am a bit confused about your tank setup. To try to figure out what may have happened so I could help you, I looked up your previous posts. You had indicated in an earlier post that you had 100# of rock and a 4" sandbed. http://www.thereeftank.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002181.html Given that, removal of the bioballs shouldn't have caused that much problem, even though it should have been done gradually. On another post, you indicated 50# rock and a 5" sandbed and on another, 40# rock. http://www.thereeftank.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002088.html
Just this past week, you inquired about adding a large amount of newly arrived rock. http://www.thereeftank.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/002210.html
If you went ahead and added the new shipment of rock to 50#, that is the cause of your rising nitrates, indicating a new cycle.
We repeatedly stressed the importance of adding the new rock slowly and only after it was cured again in a holding tank.
This does illustrate the importance of putting very detailed info about your tank in the Tank Specs section and adding a link to your specs in your Signature Line as Doug1 just suggested in another post. This will help us in analyzing these problems without relying on our failing memories or doing a search in each instance.
Please do not regard this as fussing at you. We are sincerely trying to help you develop a great reef tank and you are getting the ingredients in place. I'm only pointing out the importance of giving us enough information so that we know the question before a good answer can be given.
In fairness to those that did respond, your question was simply:
do i keep my bio balls in my wet dry or do i take them out. trying to set up a reef.
The answers were correct in the context of your question and obviously presumed that you had sufficient LR/LS, but the advice would have been very different if the background info and details about your tank had been fully set out.
Please tell us whats going on now and what you do have in the tank.
Dick
