Alright, I'm pathetic. I was looking at my dark tank through a magnifiying glass with a red light. The little critters in the sand bed are sooo cool.
But, I found this other thing too (what a great description, huh?). It looks like kinda like a small (half the dia. of a dime), clear anemone. It is on the substrate. I don't think it likes lights because it's in a shaded area under my NO 18" bulbs.
So does anyone have an idea of what my outstanding description of a creature might be. Or, perchance, a link to a picture of a glass anemone.
Aiptasia pallida* directly above, like other 'glass anemones, can appear brown to translucent tan. Their stinging cells are more potent than many, many corals --they can thus overrun a reeftank. In the wild, they are kept in check by a number of predators, including certain crustaceans and fish.
If you suspect you have one, get the suspect out and into a separate container. They can multiply VERY rapidly.
*Family Aiptasiidae is currently being looked at for reorganization (affecting present Genera Aiptasia, Bartholomea, etc...) so the identification above is potentially erroneous.
My critter does not look like any of these pictures. Thank goodness.
Now for a better descrip, since the lights are on. It is about the dia of a pea. It looks to have 5 legs and a foot extending into the substrate. It is clear or white, and has black at the joints. The first thing I think of is a spider when I look at it. I am also assuming it came off the live rock, and so it has travelled ~2'.
My critter looks like this, but is clear colored with darker bands on the fingers. The picture is of a Burrowing Tube Anemone (pachycerianthus fimbriatus). Is mine just a variation of the one shown?
Okay, I tried to post a picture, but it's smarter than me. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong.
Hermit,
You need to copy the URL of the image itself, not the page it's on. Put your cursor on the image; click with the right mouse button; if using IE, select properties, then a box will open with the image URL....highlight and use Ctrl C to copy. With Netscape, clicking with the right mouse button will give you a selection to copy the image location directly...
