SO I have had quite a few fellow TRT members to PM me lately on Fragging Technique. I think it would be nice to have a thread as reference to those with interest.
So I have promised to get some videos together of what I do, I have been cutting up Coral for allot of years. Plan on starting with the simple stuff, mushrooms, softies, polyps and so on. Then gradually work our way up to some LPS, then going for SPS. I have all of them and frag regularly so again just want to share my techniques with the community.
Any one can feel free to contribute there knowledge on the topic. I think it would be great to have others contribute.
Well I dont have any Frogspawn atm. But I will put it on the list. I can do a Blastomusa Merletti, they have pretty similar growth pattern as the Frogspawn and are done the same way.
My colt coral needs to be fragged, I have a good idea how to do it, but a video would be great. I also have some GSP that I would like to try to remove off off a rock to start up another colony to be my fragging colony. My zoas are taking over, I plan to just let them move from one flat tile to another and then break them up, is there a better way to do it? And last but not least, my branching torch coral, how would you do that just break the branches/heads off and there ya go?
Well the Torch are pretty simple. i like to take each branch off as close to the main stock as possible. So you are right there, pretty simple on those guys.
I have some Softies I can trim up, same technique as a colt so we will put that in the list to.
Had a request on some Zoos today so that one I will do over the weekend, I will cut some individual polyps and separate a bunch from a main colony.
Well I don't use any method (unless I have to) other than letting them attach on there own. I put them in a container with rubble. Most softies will attach with in a few days.
Now if there to big for a container or what ever you have, I will use a rubber band to keep the Coral in place and allow it to attach.
My DT has T5HO lighting, thats where all my corals are. I also have a 10 gallon frag tank, attached to the same sump as the DT, but it has PC lighting. The frag tank is empty as of now, but I wana start fragging for some extra money to put back into the tank.
What would you recommend, acclimate them to the PC lighting, then frag them and keep the frags under PC and return the mother colonies to the T5. Or frag then just put the frags under the PC lighting and theyll acllimate then. I know PC arent recommended for most corals, but its a 36w fixture on a 10 gallon tank so its alot of light for that shallow tank. The T5HO is a 4 bulb setup on a 75.
1- Detaching a Toad Stool from Base rock.
2- Fragging some Zoo's.
3- if I have time will do Some Kenya Tree trimming..
