This set up was probably one of the best methods I have found for removing detritus and solids from the water column. Cleaning the rock is the best attack on algae in my opinion. But keep in mind your tank cycle is so much more than the initial cycle. It can take a year or more for a true and complete cycle to take place. In that time you could see spells of any one of a slew of algaes etc. Thats where patience comes in and allowing things to do as they will. I avoided chemical wonder treatments and just used good husbandry.

I did cut my lights a bit but dont remember how long (it was several years back). The biggest thing that helped was adjusting how I cleaned rock. I took a small powerhead and hooked a couple feet of clear tubing to it and used that to blast out the rock once a week. The rock is very porous and you will be amazed at how much crap will come flying out of the rock when you do this. I did it once a week. i would first blow off the rock then let the sump and settling tank do their jobs as the tank circulated several times. then I would do routine maintenance. Most of the junk from the rock was removed by the skimmer or it settled in the settling tank which was a low flow set up. I was able to remove this tank from the system entirely with two valves so there was no disruption to the tank. Siphon it out and mix new water and when its ready reverse the two valves and the tank was back on line.

saw this on an old article how long did u leave you blue lights and white lights on for to cut back on algae growth

I have a BB and recently got over a hair algae outbreak. I was feeding a bit on the heavy side and and my lights were on a little too long.
Im much more aware of how I feed and have cut my lights back some and the algae is gone. I also took all my LR and did s "dunk and swish" in a tub of old water when I did a water change. There was a TON of detritus in the rocks. I also increased the number of snails and crabs for good measure.
My coraline has finaly started to take off nicely since it has a place to grow now! HTH
