do you have anywhere else that detritus is able to hide? like behind the LR structure? it can take quite a while for the LR to purge itself.

from the description i expect Dr. Tim's waste away is just more elemental C. it is probably doing the same thing as your bio-pellets. it is just in a more accessible form. vodka dosing in other words.

    Hey Geoff,

Wanted to get your opinion on a prob I've had for years. I have a 75 gal that's been set up for 10 years. For maybe 7 it was mostly neglected, had a deep sandbed with occasional water changes. 3 yrs ago or so I went bb and I still continually have a huge algae prob. I've used dr tims waste away for over a month with great success. However, I get phosphate surges still. Sometimes I get it to zero then a week or two later its 10. So here's my question: Has the live rock housed so much phosphate buildup over the years that it's continually leaching out? I'm half way tempted to just replace all the rock. I'm hoping by continuing with dr tim's waste away, frequent water changes, keeping the led lights at 6 hours per day (low setting) and not over feeding that I'll eventually get over this...

    Thanks for your time,
    Ethan

ps I have a sump, with a fine filter sock that I change so no nitrate factory. I use phosguard, bio pellets and have a protein skimmer.

    Hi Geoff,

I just wanted to say a big thank you for all your work, time and effort on these boards.

Returning to reefing in the UK after 8 years out of the game and I cannot tell you how grateful I am and how lucky I feel to have stumbled across one of your posts here as a reader many months ago now.
That one post led me to read more and more of your posts/threads and theories, linked me to Spanky's stuff and many others who have done such a fantastic job of bringing real info and 'thinking' to the hobby.

Takes me back to my favourite teacher from school, in our first Physics class he said, "I'm not going to teach you Physics, I'm going to teach you to think."

Anyway, I'm not here in your personals to ask questions, though if you see any of my queries around the board I'd love to get your opinion, it really is just a big thanks. I know you credit a lot of the knowledge you pass on to others but without you, I and others may never have got the message.

    All the very best, Lee.

Geoff. You have successfully changed my thinking about this hobby. Been struggling to keep my water in check in my fowler 125. Planning out a new(seperate) 125 reef tank. Already convinced to go with a cutting board bb. Ordered a conical drain settling tank 30 gallons. Bubble magus curve seven skimmer and a jabeo dc9000 return pump. Power heads total about 3500gph for water movement. Plan on putting a spray bar to clean under the rocks w the return pump.

How does that sound? I have 3 full spectrum LEDs on the cheap. That total 360 watts. About 80lbs of cycled live Rock from my established tank and 50 lbs of reef saver dry rock. Rodi water.

Could use advice on dosing, gfo or other media, and maybe even stocking.

Available to chat on my cell if it's easier.

I know you recommend me removing my substrate, can the substrate be removed all at once or do I have to take it nice and slow?

Geoff, I have now siphoned my sand, blow off my rock, did a 32 gallon water change and after 2 hours my parameters are salinity 1.024, temp 82, nitrates (80 ppm with API and >64 with redsea) phosphates .08 ppm.
So what do I do now my goal is to put some soft corals in this tank. Any advise would be great.

    Geoff,

I'd like to get your opinion on running an ATS with a protein skimmer. I have read through a lot of your post regarding that an ATS shouldn't be able to run unless your keeping 'poo' as a pet. It is something I agree with.

My thought is that I will have an oversized skimmer, 900L on a 500L tank and run an ATS after this. My thoughts are that if it doesn't grow, good. If it does then it is a also good as a safety backup. Growing means my skimmer isn't keeping up or I've got another issue I need to address. Without it I would come across another problem sooner. Is this the right thinking?

Thanks for your opinion in advance.

Geoff, are you still around? I have never finished my tank, but I have started working on it recently. I have a goal to have water in it by the end of April. I am going our of town the first week, so I will probably do it when I get back. I have tore everything out and I am rebuilding it from the ground up.

I am going to put sand in it. I know how it is, but I do not like BB. I was also looking into LED, but I think I am just going to use my MH. They are tried and true and I already own them. I will probably dig though my garage and see if I have any T5 stuff and supplement with that. Give me a nice dawn/dusk with some actinics.

Have you started a new tank yet? If you are ever back in the ATL, let me know.

It seems that it got bumped up to the sponsors starting with A. May have to do with my link going to Aquafx.net. Anyways, is it ok to drop links in my forum?

    Hey Geoff,

I'm wondering if I'm permitted to post links inside my sponsors forum. Is this acceptable? I posted a link in the livecoralreef sponsors page and after I did that the livecoralreef page disappeared. Did I do something wrong on my end to make it disappear? I'm currently doing a giveaway for a $50 gift certificate and just posted it this afternoon after the sponsor page opened. Now I can't see the page.

    Please help.

    Hey Geoff,

It's me Johnny(killerclown). I talked to Efrat yesterday and got my paypal ready to start paying but Efrat is gone until Sunday. Is there anyone that fills in for him when he's gone?
