Why take the filter media out of my Bio cube?

Why take out the filter? Cant you use the filter and live rock behind it?

Thanks,

It is suggested that you take out the filter pads and Bio Balls because they tend to load up with Detritus and become a Nitrate factory.

We pulled all the "junk" out of ours...I do run some PURA pad in it and some rubble...but that's it.

it was recommed to me that if I do anything in the center chamber of my BC i should run a fuge. I have had no problems with nitrates with my fuge running.

I also don't keep the carbon filter in it. I only use it if I'm doing a FWE dosing or if I'm doing a MAJOR cleaning that kicks up a lot of guck.

That is a good point:

If I was blasting off the live rock and kicking up a bunch of junk I would put the filter pad in for a few to catch the gunk,.. but I'd pull it back out after an hour or so.
