What is the best NANO set-up?
My son wants a fish tank in his room. Instead of the usual 10g FW tank, I think he's gonna get a nano reef. Probably around 10g's no more than 15.
What is the best, easiest or most complete way to go?
Am I better off getting a pre-packaged set-up or should I piece together a 10g tank?
Thanks for any help.

I think that depends what you want to keep and how much work you want ot put in it. For the most part the skimmers you can get for a 10 are pretty worthless IMO. Its best to just change the water. THe all in one units that people get are nice looking but it seems like people using them for a reeftank end up pulling half the stuff out anyways.

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

I vote a 10 gallon tank with a Hagen powerfilter with just carbon or other media in it. Throw a PC bulb over it and call it a day. Will this tank need to be covered?

I like the look of the all-in-ones...about all you would need in terms of extra equipment is a heater...we have 3 of them in my house 1 12G and 2 24G...I don't run a skimmer on any of them and I have pulled all the bio-balls, etc. out of the back...I think they are great for a kids room with the lid, lights built in, etc.

I had a JBJ nano cube dx it worked ok if your thinking of a FOWLR i would go with one of those you could maybe put a few corals in and you can find them on the recycler for under or about $100. Only drawback are the fans suck and they might have to be replaced.

I want something that is simple and definitely covered to keep evap to a minimum.
I plan on some LR and LS. Probably some snails, a cleaner shrimp and a fish. I really would like to do damsels, but I guess 10g's would get small real fast.

I would look into an all-in-one. By the time you get everything you need for a 10 gallon tank to make it SW ready, and have any equipment that is going to last, the cost becomes comparable to an All-in-one and with an AIO, you don't have to chase parts. Just plug it up, fill it up, and turn it on.

I am thinking about getting a tank for my son, he turns 7 in June and is fascinated with the hobby already, and when I do it will definitely be an AIO system. The lid alone is going to be a saving grace for many issues that can come up with children and tanks.
