I'm in. I voted for under 20 total. Is there a sign up as of yet?

I say leave the poll open till Friday and at the end of the week we stick to the majority opinion. Can't make everybody happy ya know but as long as we agree that there's been a fair vote(no Florida ballot boxes allowed Yard) then we can get on with this.

Hopefully I am not stepping on anyone's toes, but I PM'd Greg in reference to the potential prizes for the build off. It looks as if we are nearing the end of firming up our Build Off rules, here on TRT.

By the way, the total volume poll was a great idea. Thanks!

I didn't suggest this thing lookin for a prize. But I am pretty sure that all of us "participants" can come up with somethin. Perhaps we can offer up a anty so to speak. Or perhaps some of us established reefers can offer up a few frags. In the end we all get a nano and that to me is prize enough, on top of a lil TRT recognition. I say we get the volume issue dealt with befor we concern ourselves with "prizes".

Oone question. would a canister filter and CLS add to my total volume? Technically it will add close to a gallon to my total volume. If we are going 20g max then I will forgo a sump but I will run a canister. I need yalls ok.

I was under the impression that it wouldn't be a problem as long as you were'nt upping the volume a ridiculous amount such as a 5 gallon skimmer or 5 gallon canister.

I think even if you were running an extremely large canister filter you wouldn't be adding more than a gallon, maybe a gallon and a half of water.

Just my opinion though.

Okay Guys!

Here's another iteration of the Rules. Open to discussion.
  • No limits on main tank or sump size as long as total volume does not exceed 20 gallons, excluding overflow, cls, skimmer, system piping, top-off (don't go crazy though, with 4" pipe on a 20!).
  • Must be a new setup, can't be an already established tank up and running now.
  • Start time to be Oct. 10, 2005 to run through April 10, 2006.
  • Equipment choice is unlimited, as long is it is reasonable; i.e. not a skimmer that holds 5 gallons to intentionally add to system size.
  • Prizes given to the winner upon a vote by registered members at the end of the time allotted.
  • Use any type of tank that one would like, and any equipment one would like.
  • Post updates in the appropriate forum, designed for the Build Off. Giving each entrant a dedicated thread that only they can post in, with updates & pictures. Have an overall build off thread where anyone can post.
  • Make it a contest where ones knowledge and design ideas are ultimately shared with others, in order to further the understanding of the hobby.
  • you should have to post pics, at certain points in the time line, gives everyone a view of what's happening.
  • Set up the contest where it isn't just how many dollars one throws at their nano in order to win.
  • put a cap, on the money you can spend, that makes it even for everyone.
The last couple of bullets are where we need to really think. This is an expensive hobby, no doubt, though it can be done "ghetto" and come off with a nice tank. If we depend on voting for the final determination the it's going to be subjective anyway so a tank full of acans versus a huge brown Pocillipora may be a toughie. We can lay out some criteria for voting, but in the end it'll be who gets the most votes.
Try this:
Voting Criteria
*It's what's IN the tank that counts; artistic endeavor, health of tank and occupants, growth rates.
*Points should be considered for DIY, technological execution, original ideas.

yardboy,

Looks like we are firming up the rules, and I think we might actually have something now. Sounds like fun...

One question? If there is a cap on the dollars one can spend, what will it be?

I have already priced out the equipment I need for this and I am already pushing 600$ and that is going as cheap as I can with still reliable equipment. I know people who spend that much on lights. If there is a cap on cost it should be reasonable. People will know a BLINGED out setup when they see it. You know, the systems where you OOHHH & AHHHH the gazillion dollar skimmer but never notice the tank. Then again some of us don't have a machine shop so all equip we buy is new or used, not just liein around the shop. 1500$ sounds fair to me. That's enough for a decent set of lights, tank, skimmer and goodies. Price cap should not include livestock.

If you don't include livestock, the price shouldn't be greater than 600, unless of course the lfs's are priced extremely high or something. 1500 including livestock?

well I have to buy lights, a tank, pumps, the stand I am going to alter.I can see me spending well over 600 including livestock. 1500 total sound more than fair to me.

Who will determine that? There are alot of different opinions on suitable occupants, etc.
Would it not be better to take popular choice as the deciding factor?
Ie at the end date, have a thread with a poll where anyone and everyone on the forum can vote for their favourite tank, and they can give reasons why. That way you can sort out a couple of winners catagories too.

And maybe a seperate poll for the actual entrants to vote on their fav nano, sort of like 'appreciation for your peers', where we choose our favourites from our own compitition.

???
