How about 20 max for the display, and 10 max for the sump?? If the tank is sumpless then the max is 20 gallons.

I would really like to run a 5g surge setup on a custom size 20.

I might get in on this as well. I've been wanting to build another nano from the start. I'd be doing complete DIY from the tank to the skimmer.

I like niels rules 20g total. there are a lot of people out there running 29g as a regular tank. maybe 10g display max 20g total. is nov. 1st too far out for a start to get organized? 6 mos. sounds good to get it built, cycled, and stocked. I am flexible as long as majority agree to the rules. everything external, cls, fuge, sump, skimmer, etc. have to count as total volume

Man I was really hopin to use this cool 30g extra tall. See I already cut the glass for an external overflow. But since the majority rules I can stick to the 30g total volume rule. I am leaning more towards an 8 month time frame but 6 would be fine. Say start the 1st of October and end at the end of March. I also feel there should be classes. Like most creative, most custom and even a bling bling catagorie for those rich folk out there who can dump a gazillion dollars on a setup.

How about this as an idea. Break it up into 3 Categories for Maxium water content.
10 gallons and below (so we can get picos)
20 gallons
30 gallons.

I'm with vince in the 20g total catagory and start time. If we need multiple categories, where is the end of the nano group I see so many people on here with 29g reefs, no offense to anyone looking to build in this category, it does not seem nano or "very small" being so common.
my thought 10g display, 20g total, but if you go 5/15 or 15/5 or something that's OK too.

Okay, after just coming off a nano buildoff at ReefMonkey, I'd like to suggest that you get the rules stricty laid out, and please give it a reasonable time. At RM interest seemed to wane and they called the contest after only a few months. My nano looks good, I think (and is in first place at the present time in the voting), but it's just starting to get some good growth on, and will look much better in about 4-6 months. I'm not sure I'll enter this one, though I've still got tons of ideas I didn't try in the RF buildoff. Maybe a "ghetto setup" with things I've already got, since my budget's busted on the last contest!

Here's what I see as a accumulation of rules, so far:
  • No limits on main tank or sump size as long as total volume does not exceed 20 gallons, excluding overflow, cls, skimmer, system piping, top-off (don't go crazy though, with 4" pipe on a 20!).
  • Must be a new setup, can't be an already established tank up and running now.
  • Start itime to be Oct. 10, 2005 to run through April 10, 2006.
  • Equipment choice is unlimited, as long is it is reasonable; i.e. not a skimmer that holds 5 gallons to intentionally add to system size.
  • Prizes given to the winner upon a vote at the end of the time allotted.
  • Use any type of tank that one would like, and any equipment one would like.
  • Post updates in the appropriate forum, designed for the Build Off. Giving each entrant a dedicated thread that only they can post in, with updates & pictures. Have an overall build off thread where anyone can post.
  • Make it a contest where ones knowledge and design ideas are ultimately shared with others, in order to further the understanding of the hobby.
  • you should have to post pics, at certain points in the time line, gives everyone a view of what's happening.
  • Set up the contest where it isn't just how many dollars one throws at their nano in order to win.
  • put a cap, on the money you can spend, that makes it even for everyone.
What have I missed?

Sounds like you have it Yard. I would realy like to see the total volume uped to 30g but maybe restrict the display to a max size of 20g. This would give you much more leway in sump design but will go with what ever the majority decides on. Perhaps somebody could sweet talk TD into offerin up a few of his wicked frags as a prize??? Heh heh, that motivation enough for me.

Hunh, well, I'd love to hop in on this but here's the problem. I just set up a 5.5 nano 3 weeks ago. It is cycled and has live rock in it with some spare xenia growing in it. Of course, this is an unfair advantage over those who have to build one from scratch, so I was wondering if I could submit final pics for my tank earlier than the end date to make up for the head start I have had. That is, if it starts next week, then I'd submit pics 4 weeks early.

I'm not really concerned about it. If anyone feels like this is unfair, please say so and I'll withdraw my request.
