Too much water current? Sad ending...
I have had this cute little False Perc and seems to be struggling a bit. My wife thought it was too much water movement. He has been sitting on the bottom and leaning against the side of the tank in this area shown. So I turned off the filter, and within 15-20 minutes, he was moving around the tank like normal. He is only about 1 inch long and the water movement doesnt seem to much.
What I have is a HOB filter. Is that too much? Do I need something different?

well don't think you have too much current only having a HOB. I have a closed loop system in my 10 gal pushin arround 150 gph and my clown don't have any probs.

Thanks for the encouragement. He is looking a little sad.
I added another 4lbs of live rock today. Maybe that will cut down the flow.

Okay... umm... that last pic of your clown, worries the hell outta me hehe...
I don't have experience with clown fish, but the last time one of my fish died, thats EXACTLY how it looked the night before it died... On the bottom corner laying against the glass as if it was on strike.
Don't take my post as a big warning to do something lol... Like I said, I dont have experience with clown fish, so I dunno if thats normal for them or something... But I just wanted to let ya know that I've seen that happen one of my other fish which happened to end up dead the morning after.

Well, I have my filter on the same timer as the lights. So at night, they are all off. This morning he was at the top in the corner. Even after the lights and filter came on, he stayed up there.
I still didnt see him eat anything this morning either.

Funny, I originally had 30 pounds of nice live rock in my tank with a farm rasied clown. I just added 45 more pounds of Dr fosters , and now my clown is acting the same way. My ammonia was high when I added the rock, but it has since dropped down.
Honestly I feel bad for my little guy, he is acting the same way, leaning on the glass and not real energentic. This might sound bad, but I hate to leave the little guy suffering in the tank, and have thought about bringing him back to the store, or a friends tank.

hey steve-o have you tested your water? what dose it test out to . and may I ask why you turn off the filter ? seeing as this filter is your only water movement I would'nt sugest that you do that (turn it off at night) you need to keep the water moving . I think that when you do that it may be bouncing you rsystem arround too much. anyonelse have any input on this.and BTW if you have only had this fish for 48 hrs give it some time to get used to the system and hopefully it will come arround. in your sig it says you have a yellow tail do you still have it? is it pickin on the clown?

My water tested out fine. It is a carbon filter like I had when it was FW tank. I turned it off to stop the water movement and give the fish a break. Hs seemed to like that. Its on from 5:30am to 8:30pm.
The yellow tail doesnt bother the clown at all. The clown stays in the open water and the damsel stays in the rocks most of the time.
Thanks again for all the imput.

ok but remember the whole reason behind having flow in the tank is to help the LR work as "filter media" the current pushes the water thru the little pores which inturn is how the "LR filtration process" works so when you are turning off the "current" in a way you are turning off your filtration. atleast that is the way I understand it .as for the fish dose the current in the ocean stop at night (or anyonther time of the day) to give the fish a rest?

He is doing much better now and seems to be like he should be.
Another variable in his demeanor might have been water temp. With the mini compact lights, I needed to add a fan. With out the fan it was over 82, with the fan it got down to 73. I made a baffle to control the air flow and now I am keeping it around 78. It looked like the warmer water was helping him, but who knows.
Thanks for checkin in.

I definitely would keep the flow on 24 hours a day....that would be best, IMO. I hope that helps. A HOB shouldnt be too much current.
