Sumps of JBJ nano cubes
I would just like to hear what people are puttin in the back of their jbj nano cubes (sump). I have put some live rock b/c i hear it helps better than the bio-balls and ceramic rings. Any other suggestions.

So just what is in the tank? I read that if it is not a fish only tank, to remove the ceramic and bioballs.
I just have the foam, heater and charcoal in mine, I have an auto topoff built that I mounted inside also

i have one sponge in the first chamber (soon to add LR rubble) some LR rubble in the second chamber (soon to add macro algae, for a refugium, check out www.nanocustoms.com for more ideas on the refugium set-up) and in the third chamber im going to upgrade my pump to a mag606
i dont use carbon or bioballs.

On the startup sheet it even says to not use the bio balls if it is goin to be a reef tank. I took mine out after five months cause i heard they were bad for the reef setup. I added some LR and will plan to put more. I wanted to see if anyone has put algae in the sump

Has anyone tried to build a custom protein skimmer for the JBJ nano cubes? I have been researching how those work and think I may try to build a small skimmer.

Bioballs are fine as long as you rinse them monthly to avoid builup...

So, if you rinse them, what is the point of having them? That will strip off all the bacteria. I'd trash the bio balls unless you have no (or not enough) live rock.

have you seen the nanocube build off happening over at reefs.org?
if you haven't checked it out yet, it is well worth a look... you can see what a lot of folks are doing equipment and setup wise.

Hello. I'm new to the forum and to reef tanks for that matter. I started my 12g DX about 3 months ago. I didn't put the bioballs or ceramic rings in. I replaced the carbon with a product called RENEW. It's advertised as an organic remover without removing trace elements.

I have filter floss and tonga rock in chamber 1, chamber 2 has some phoszorb and chemzorb plus more filter floss, chamber 3 has my heater and stock pump.
