Skimmer Help

I added a current fission nano skimmer to my 5.5g I was able to fit it in the HOB filter I use for flow. I have no idea how to use a protein skimmer so if anyone can tell me if it looks like I have it set correctly I'd appreciate it

I tucked some filter floss in front of it to help get rid of the bubbles which helps a bit

I know but I have it and I am testing the theory a crappy skimmer is better than none!

Do you get a lot of foam in the cup?

I just set it up a few hours ago it's a bubbling but the cup seems to have more water than foam (is that considered skimming wet?)

this is a quote from the directions

FOAM PRODUCTION IS VERY WET
This is often found when first using the skimmer. As the tank matures, the foam will turn to a thicker type foam. If the problem is excessive it indicates the water level is too high in the skimmer or the skimmer is submersed to low in the tank. The skimmer may need to be raised small increments at a time in order to operate efficently.

No where in the directions can I find where the water level should be

The higher the water level in the skimmer the wetter the skimmat(sp) will be. I would give it sometime to work its self in. Then you can play with the water level. What pump do you have on the skimmer?

have you got anything other than water to go in the collection cup?? what setting do you have the pump on? I played with mine for only an hour, but I can tell it will take a lot of tinkering to get to work......I like the challenge though that is why I'm back in the hobby!!

I'm also using skimmer considered by most being crappy, other appreciate it, Visi-Jet (inside tank). New aquarium with not much of waste gives not much foam - exactly as was said. When bioload is usual, adjustments are mostly related to keeping level of water at certain point of skimmer body - for my skimmer it is red band (marker made by manufacturer). In reality, I have keep water level 1/4" below recommended marker - otherwise water is collected instead of wet or dry foam. This is inconvenient - even with placing skimmer as high as possible using suction cups, level of water in the tank have to be low, may be 1.5" from rim.

In your case, you can check instructions for recommended level of water and marker for it (my guess is below lower edge of transparent cap), and try place skimmer higher or lower in HOB filter, even with some DIY holders or suction caps. Changes should be seen in a few minutes (or 10-15 minutes if after feeding, oils can interfere with foam production. Use of tap water conditioner, containing slime coat, may lower foam production at all. Last was not problem for me, but manufacturer mentioned such possibility).

Does this skimmer allow some rotation of this transpaternt top for adjusting water flow though skimmer? Maximum or 3/4 of maximum may work the best.
This dark hole on top is air intake, right? My skimmer after 2 months of work sometimes stops producing a lot of bubbles, than I push some air back through air intake (placing air tubing at it and pushing air by mouth), it works. May be this is not recommended, don't know.

Never was able to collect dark brown liquid - tea colored only, but a lot of it, what is good enough for me, only more frequently empty collection cup.
Hope, it helps. Good luck!

One guy in this thread uses Fussion skimmer very efficiently - you can ask him:
