Brand new deluxe nano!

Hi, my tank I believe is a deluxe nano cube (has two fans, and two 24watt lights stock). I just started cycling it yesterday (9-6-04) with 10lb live argonite sand, and 12lb live Fijian rock. On the front most left rock, you might be able to see some feather dusters that were attached to the rock I picked out. Can I expect these to die off while the tank is cycling? I also have some other "live" things in the tank, and are these expected to die off as well while the levels are stabilizing? Thanks! Can't wait to add more critters to my tank!

~Claudio

Hi, Claudio! If your live rock was cured in the store where you bought it you may not see much of a cycle. If it is fresh/uncured or spent some time out of the water in transit to your tank you could see a full cycle as dieoff on the rock decays. To preserve the existing life you should monitor the ammonia and nitrite regularly through the cycle period and do a water change as needed to keep the levels low. You don't have to be fanatical about it, remember that rock life already survived days out of the water in transit to your lfs, however, you can control dieoff by keeping the water quality up. HTH

Thanks oodley! I took a water sample in to my LFS (one week cycling) and they said it wasn't even worth testing, since in the next two weeks everything will be changing. I made them test it anways, and they said "everything looks like it should after 1 week." I find it hard to believe them that all the life in my tank (mostly feather dusters) and whatnot will die off, and that I should be expecting huge algae growth (brown and green I think they said) over the next 2-4 weeks, as so far my tank looks pristine and thriving. Is this always the case, and should I be expecting this? My live rock I purchased was in a big open topped tank with some pretty serious looking filtration, so that is promising for hopefully a shortened cycle. Thank you for the reply, I appreciate the many suggestions!
