Quick help with a UV Sterilizer

What do you think of UV Sterilizers? I was told that I needed one because I have a lot of algea swirling around in my tank. I thought I just needed a skimmer. I was told a skimmer wouldn't remove the algea but the sterilzer would.
Please let me know
