Question about lighting for 10 gallon
Okay so i just started a 10 gallon reeftank and am currently waiting for it to cycle.I've got 20 lbs of live sand 14lbs of live rock.. i intend to get more but im broke after spending close to 100 dollars at the lfs lol.So far my tank is setup up with 2 maxi-jet 606 powerheads 1 aquaclear hob refugium with cheato and lr and i have a red sea prizm skimmer on the way.So my question is im getting the coralife 130 watt power compact lights for free but there the ones that fit a 29 so i think its 30 inches long im wondering would this be to much light to have???I plan on keeping soft hard and some sps coral. Also if i can add anything else to my tank please let me know. This is only the second tank ive made so far so any help is appreciated.

It won't be too much light... but it may be a heat issue. Only one way to find out for sure is to hook it up and watch your temp.

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

Really lightwise you are going to be able to keep just about anything. Even the bottom of a 10 is going to be pretty bright. Now, keeping nutrients under control and parameters stable may be another story. a 10 is small enough it can be a challenge keeping temp and salinity stable enough for some more sensitve critters. The other big issue is territory. Corals fight over space in the wild and a little slice of ocean like a nano you have to keep this in mind. Some LPS have sweeper tenticles (there way of finding competition and declaring war) that can nearly cover an entire 10 gallon nano.

Hmm ill keep that in mind. I will make sure to do research before i purchase any.I got one more question i was thinking about putting 2 purple firefish and a yellow clown goby in that tank would the lights affect them at all or should i just stick with coral and cleaning crew?

The hardest thing that I have run into in keeping a 10g reef is that it is very difficult keeping your nutrient level in check. Seems like every time you feed your fish you get an algae bloom. You should be good to go with the lighting you have. The best advice I can give you is blast your rocks off with a baster or powerhead at least once a week and do a 1 gallon water change. Being religious about keeping your water, rocks, and substrate clean and stable will give you the best results in the long run.

3 fish may be a little heavy for a 10 gallon... at least if you are going to have any SPS or other nutrient sensitive critters. If you look at firefish look into a covering, they are known jumpers

If you think that's bad...i saw on youtube a guy who had a ten gallon "reef" he called it. had 3 yellow tail damsels, a domino damsel, two clownfish, and a scooter blenney. I commented that they may be able to do that but think of the fish.

I have 2 fish in my 10 gallon and it's plenty. Even then you can tell they would like a little more room. They are both only about 1.5 inches though. I wouldn't put more than that myself. As cutietwo said, there are those who do it and just pack a tank with fish. If you have enough live rock to house the bacteria to handle that kind of bioload than your water will technically be clean enough but it is most definately not fair to your fish. They are living creatures that deserve the space to be happy and healthy.

I like the pair of ocellaris or percula clown idea for a 10 gallon, that way you have a nice set of fish that are friendly with eachother in a small space.
