Not needed on a tank that size a small water change will do much more.

what livestock do you have in your tank? if your bioload is fairly small, then there shouldn't be a need for one. I"ve got a 5.5aga and I"ve tried various skimmers, both DIY and store bought, and my tank just doesn't produce enough waste for it to make much skimmate. WCs should be fine

My load is pretty high, i guess. I seem to be running into Nitrate problems.
It might be unrelated.

I have a 6 gallon eclipse nano at work so it is not easy to do water changes. I got an aqua c remora for the protein skimmer. you can also just get a red sea airlift 30 or 60.

do you have a bigger tank? What you could do is take a cupful out of your bigger tank and put it into that one every day ( after taking a cup out of the 5.5)

I"ve got a 5.5 and IMO, there just isn't a point in skimming unless you plan to really change your water infrequently, which is bad because then you run into issues w/ trace element replacement as well. As long as you do at least a 25% WC every week or so, there should be no need for a skimmer.

I'm using a cpr backpack skimmer on my ten gallon, and I do 50% water changed once or twice a week. I think it works great!! Even if you can put a skimmer for a day on your tank it does make the water quality better.

Hey petshopboy. I had a 3.5 gal hex tank for a while and had almost 0 nitrates with a descent bioload. The trick really is just keep everything clean, sand and behind rocks, and do weekly water changes. Its just what you have to do with a tank that small. Its not like the water change takes long though. Maybe 5 min. max.
