Prep for 20 gallon reef

Hello, I am new to the forum and new to the world of salt. I have been a dedicated freshwater hobbyist for a few years but am seeking to venture into salt with a standard twenty gallon tank. I have a 30 gallon whisper trickle filter, an airstone filter, marineland powerhead, and a heater. My tank is in the process of cycling with 4 small damsels. I mainly purchased the damsels for cycling because their aggression may affect what I want to add later. But, my main questions were that I wanted to know if anyone had some tips to help prep and maintain my reef without a skimmer. All I have is about 10 lbs of fiji rock and have added a little calcium +3 but besides that I have no clue what tricks of the trade can be used to enhance the quality of my water before ant expensive additions. Also, I used live sand and was wondering if how much quicker that excels the cycling process. I have a feshwater test kit will that work for salt and if so what are ideal levels.
Thanks

well heres one answer to ur question, if you arent going to use a skimmer... you are going to have to do water changes weekly, probably you're best bet would be 2-3 gallons if u want to maintain water purity.
LS (live sand) deffinitly helps cycle you're tank, as well as purified LR (live rock)
ummm.... how long has you're tank been up and running???
if the damsels werent in there i would suggest adding a few lil' shrimp that you would find in the frozen food section of you're grocery store (you could just put them in a nylon hosery, or whatever u call that... and let it sit in you're tank for a few days... letting it decompose that helps cycle a tank really well, but i wouldnt suggest it now that the damsels are in there)
just my .02, hopefully someone else on here can answer you're other questions.
