overflow for JBJ 12dx
I just set up a JBJ 12 gallon dx. I left everything in it that came. So far all I have is about 15 lb live sand and about 7lb live rock. The live rock came with a sea squirt, star coral, clams of some type,purple/orange/red coralline,a hitch hiker crab that I think is a stone crab. I plan on having about 20lb live rock a, a couple of gobies or blennies and easy soft corals i.e shrooms. I will try and pick up the aqua clear surface skimmer because I have a film on the top.. maybe a coffee filter would grab it for know, but that is a temporary fix.
now to my question. I am debating about doing a mod to make it a true overflow. any thoughts, suggestions? or do you think the aqua clear will be fine?
Also my tank is running about 78-80 with pump and lights on for 4 hours. in the AM when I get up with just pump around 76. anyone else think pump is running hot?
sorry about the book, but just joined and being new to nano..well lots of questions concerns etc.

nah dont worry about the book, im long winded myself... i recently set-up my nano cube dx 12 this weekend, only becuase i had had two tanks in a matter of two days leak on me so i said screw it im goin w/ the jbj. i had always been a diy reefer anyways, i found something on another site that i thought was interresting, and it helped alot for my surface skim, i found where u can take the back-side of a cassette tape case and put it over the intake and it will sorta work like an overflow, if u PM me i will try to find the site i found that on, just for the time being it really helps, atleast it did for me... im working on something more efficient at the moment. and 76 is actually ok mine runs at 78... any more questions feel free to ask.

Skilter...
I would be interested in the same idea...I have a JBJ 12 nano which has been setup for three months now...just added some corals (green mushrooms, assorted mushroom and yel polyps) and a few fan worms...critters are 5 blue legged hermits , a Mexican Turbo, Magarita and 4 Astrea Snails....specs on tank are...
SG 1.023
Ca 480
PH 8.3
NH3&4 0.0
NO2 0.0
NO3 0.0
Temp 77.9-79.2
Probably add some Ocellaris Clowns in a month...

I read "Pull the bio balls and ceramic" out of the filter system.

yes, you can remove the ceramic balls and other media, i added LR rubble to the second chamber and i wll soon add macro algae to that too.

so skilter, you removed the 2nd chamber stuff? again I am new so I left everything stock. I plan on having about 24lb of LR in the tank with about 15 lb sand..would this do, or do you no like the bio balls

i forgot exactly why, hopefullly someone more knowledgeable can answer this, but the LR does the work for the bioballs... and does a better job, what i have done so far is in the first chamber i have one sponge (when i get more time i am going to add some LR ruble there) in my second chamber i have LR ruble (im going to do a mod that will fit an extra light in the canopy that will allow for light to this chamber so i can have a makeshift refugium there) and third chamber is the pump ( im going to upgrade to a maxijet 606)

Did the cassette case trick to my JBJ 12 (thanks again skilter for the tip)...have to say I am impressed with its performance...great idea and my hats off to the orignator of this idea...Hey JBJ are ya listening? Keeps the tank at the perfect level too and the sump area doesn't have a scum forming in it like it was before...as for the cassette case, make sure you use the style that has the 1/2" flange all the way across and not the one that has a "V" shape cutout.
Corals- green mushrooms, assorted mushroom and yel polyps
Inverts-2 pink/white and 2 green/white fan worms
Critters-5 blue legged hermits, a Mexican Turbo, Magarita and 4 Astrea Snails...
Specs on tank are...
SG 1.023, Ca 480, PH 8.3, NH3&4 0.0, NO2 0.0, NO3 0.0, Temp 77.9-79.2

hey no problem simpleman, im impressed w/ the cassette idea myself... im currently using the v-shaped cassette only because it was the only one i could find in black, but it seems to be serving its purpose well. im going to cut some teeth in it later tonight.
