newbie with questions
goodday all,I will start by saying hello to everyone, this is my first post on your forum.Ive just started the cycle with a 20gal long with a 10gal sump,I got the 20 for free,so I bought a little 10 gal and made a sump.Ive got about 20lbs of rock in the main tank and about 10 in the sump, and a full 5gal bucket of really sweet sand. This is not my first time Ive delt with this as Im into freshwater aswell,my question is ,why is there brown alge forming on my rocks and return outlet?this is only happening on one side of the tank, could it be the sun peeking through the blinds ?or could it be my light?I do leave the light on during the day..I dont know whats going on,the tank looks like you know what.this is not happening in the sump, thats why I cant figure it out..thanks

Welcome to TRT!! Most likely you are experiencing a diatom outbreak. This is common after the tank cycles. It will go away on its own. It is usually considered a good thing to see..

If you used live rock and live sand, you may have just had a mini cycle.

It is not bad. Have you checked your levels? Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate?

ammonia is 2.5 nitrites 0 and nitrates are 10.I do have nitrates in my tap water as Ive had alot of problems with my discus, right now I cant afford an RO unit, because of shipping and duty.Should I do a water change?say 20%?

No need for a water change. The nitrates are your problem. If you have No3 in your water, then you will need to get water from somewhere. Check you LFS and see if they offer it. Keep monitoring your tank, nitrites should begin going up soon. Once ammonia and nitrites are at 0, then your cycle will be done.

sorry its been awhile, thanks for the tips, the pet stores here(2) suck.they really dont specialize in anything, accept to rob you.The ocean water here is clean but Im still a little uneasy about it.I dont want to pollute the tank with some alge or anemone.I will look into an RO unit if I have too.

Welcome to TRT! I have relatives(well known there)that live there! You should get a RO/DI filter. That brown algae will go away after the cycled.Good luck with it!
