Newbie, Newbie, he has questions!

Im new to this.
I previously had a 20 gallon freshwater, and i was looking on craigslist and I found a used 10 gallon nano reef tank. I did some research on it for a few hours, and im considering creating one. I'm only 13, so i probably wont get any of the stuff you're saying. So please try to keep it simple.
Im just wondering what a normal 10 gallon nano reef woul need. Like lights, filter, powerhead, etc. I heard a powerhead and liverock/coral works as a pretty good filter, but i would still like to know more about what I would need.

Just incase you're wondering, its not ONLY going to be a reef i'm looking forward to having some gobies and some clownfish.
Thanks for your time!

I suppose at 13 your funds could be an issue, but you can still pu together a pretty cool reef. You can get simple lighting and still grow softies.....shrooms, zoa's, xenia, green star polyp etc..

Don't get more than 1-2 fish (2 could even be pushing it). If you go to www.liveaquaria.com you can read up on fish in teh nano-fish section. I'd run your choices by everyone here, just to get their experiance.

For powerheads, it often depends on your aquascape as to how many power heads you need. but a lot of people that run a 10g have 1-2 Koralia Nano powerheads. They're great and about $25 each.

You may also want to read around in the Nano-buildoff (link in my sig). There are alot of people building 10g and you can get a lot of ideas.

Most important lesson in reef keeping.....BE PATIENT!!! nothing good happens in a reef tank fast. Ask LOTS of questions and remember that every here on TRT has your tanks success in mind when they give you any information............if ten people tell you not to something and 1 person tells you it's OK.....I'd go with the ten.

Thank you soooo much for this info, but ive been looking around and people say only get 1-2 fish but they have gobies, snails, shrimp, and other things. Im guessing only fish like clownfish count in your 1-2?

the shrimp snails and stuff like that are in the category of invertabrates and most of those that you mentioned are a clean-up crew they will keep you tank clean... and yes 1-3 fish is what i've heard too

gobies would count as 1 of the 2 fish also

shrimps, snails and other inverts don't add to much bioload

A lot of people get a pair of clowns for a 10g tank, but they can get 3 1/2", so 2 is quite a lot. there are a few small gobies that may work better.......

Hi Fin Red Banded Goby is really cool looking or a Neon blue Goby is fun, red head goby

Then you could throw in a bunch of fun inverts, skunk shrimp.....scarlet shrimp.....a pair of sexy shrimp (their my favorite, I'm gettig some soon). A pom pom crab, a colorful variety of hermit crabs.

there's all kinds of fun stuff you throw in there.

What about those coral band shrimp or what ever.
They look like that red/white one you showed me, but they have claws.
I'm also just wondering if those fish/inverts you told me are cheap.

Are the shrimps, snails, and hermits all 15-20 dollars?
Or just the gobies?

shrimps, gobies and fancy crabs will run you about that each, the snails and hermits will be around $1.50 each.

depends on your LFS (Local fish store).
