New to the forum - Have a couple of Nano questions.

Hello,

I found this forum last night, looks like it will be super helpful!!!!

I have had a 90g FOWLR tank since last year, things have gone very well. Decided that I would like another tank in different part of the house so I went and bought a 12g JBJ Nano Deluxe. I filled it with water from my existing tank, as well as a large chunk of lv as well as a little bit of ls. The rest of the subtrate is crushed coral that I rinsed well before I put it in the tank.

I am assuming that since I am using established water/rock/sand that my tank should be ready to place some corals/fish sooner rather than later. I am planning on letting the tank run for a week or so to make sure that everything is ok.

My goal for this tank is to finally have some corals and other plants, maybe a small fish or two. Since I have not yet tried any corals or plants I am not sure on how many I can put in at once, besides space issues what limits do I have on the amount of corals I can put in? A recommendation for a small anenome that I could put in (would maybe like a clown in there) that would hopefully not outgrow the tank too quickly. Also, do I need to add calcium suppliments if I want to keep corals?

I know this is a lot of questions, but I would like to start out in the right direction.

Thank You...

well... welcome to the nano side. it is fun. as far as your cycling goes... you're done. using well established rock, sand and water... you should be ready to go!

how many corals can you place in a 12Ga ? oh wow... i have seen a lot of really nice tanks that have TONS of corals and anemonies. It is a great opportunity! A rose anemone would be a good choise for your tank. as luck would have it, they are one of the more expensive anemonies, but they are nice... and a good choice for an Ocellaris Clown host.

Hope some of this helps... good luck with it!

Welcome!

Lighting is an issue for anemones and strong lighting in a nano can give you heat problems if you don't plan well for it. Also, anemones can get rather large and as they tend to sting corals or unwary fish, usually a nano with an anemone becomes a species-only tank at some point. (Then again, you could always use it as an excuse to upgrade to a larger reef tank... )

Be careful what macro-algae (plants) you introduce, many of them become an absolute nuisance and will over-run corals.

I love nanos, they can be such fun tanks, but it takes a little bit of extra planning when dealing with space issues and animals that normally would not be in such close contact in the wild.

I hope you enjoy your time here on TRT!
