new to reef tanks/sw in general

im starting a 10 gal reef tank. the tank is cycled, and has 2 10s 50/50 bulbs. i have 10lbs of live sand, and about 8lbs of live rock. im really kinda hesitent to put anything in there too fast. what is the recommended time to wait before adding any coral? im looking at getting a clean up crew here in a week just to get things started. also from what ive been reading things tend to show up in the tank after putting in live rock. well on one piece of the rock, there is a drinking straw size opening, and every once and awhile a red paint brush type "thing" comes out about a quarter of an inch. um any clues on what that is. im trying to read up as much as poosible, but still havent seen anything that really resembles it. sorry for the rambling

you have 2 10 watt 50/50's.... if that what i am understanding u to say then you need more light. You need about 4-7 watts per gallon to really have a good coral system... you only have 2 watts... you may be able to pull off mushrooms and some of the hardier polyps but nothing hard. Maybe im misunderstanding you though. AS far as waiting to add coral...i would throw at least one small fish in there to make for real sure its cycled, are u planning on doing fish and corals or corals only? If its cycled you can put a coral in when u want... just get something cheap like yellow star polyps or something cheap in ur area to start off with... and ask the person at ur pet store exactly what kind of care it needs... Also that paint brush thing is called a "feather duster" look this up on any saltwater website. they are fine filter feeders and depending on what all u have in there may or may not make it. these are EXtrememly common on new live rock... if u wana try to keep it alive and have corals and things of that nature it will be good of u to look into products such as Kent Phytoplex, and their other items for fine filter feeders such as polyps, But for now i would probably just leave it be and just see if it makes it.
