New Nano

Hello everyone,

I set up a 12 gallon Nano Cube recently. I have live rock, live sand, 2 sexy shrimp and turbo snails in there right now. I really want to have a successful nano, but wanted to hear your system for water changes. Please let me in on the secret.....hehe

I gallon once per week. I maek and keep approx 5 gals of saltwater ready to go. I use a 1 gallon bucket and siphon out the gallon sometimes siphoning off the detritus and sometimes just water. I then fill that bucket back up and pour into tank.

What ever procedure you use make sure it's easy on yourself otherwise it won't get done as often as it should.

If you want a decent setup count on around $300 could be a little less or could be a little more depending on what you get. This would be all the equipment and everything ready to go except livestock.

There is an e-bay store called "aquabuys" they have a minibow 7 Nano setup complete with everything needed to start an adventure in salt They sell it for around $220 --- you might want to check it out.

Hey Angelo,

Sorry for the latency. But if you want an all in one tank, you might want to look into a JBJ Nano Cube. It comes with built in filter, and a power compact. I got mine for $120 and personaly I love it. As far as maint. I keep up with a 25% weekly water change. Not very hard to take care of at all. HTH

In this hobby I think it is imperative to go slow, if you want to see lots of stuff grow. I have seen to many people who have added many $'s of fish, corals and inverts way to quickly. It is as if people don't have enough patience, ok I was guilty of this when I first started. Take the needed time to allow your system to mature and your knowledge to grow, and you will surely be rewarded. Thanks Neil

ditto ckreef, it all depends on what you want to use for equipment....I just started a 5.5 gallon, ordered a 36 watt PC, 22 pounds of live sand, heater, and a filter for $100.00. I took some live rock and caulerpa out of my 29 gallon reef tank refugium and it was cycled in about 4 days...

I recently bought a 12 gallon JBJ nano w/ 10lb. fiji, LS, 2 damsel, 2 snail and 10hermit for 160.00$ I think it was a package deal but if you look around you can find them. Mine is about two months young, it cycled in almost exactly two weeks, and it looks beautiful now, my striped pipefish loves it!
