New 12g nano
I've been lurking awhile and decided to post up on my first saltwater venture (Naono 12 DX). From what I've seen so far it seems like the consensus is to remove two of the sponges, ditch the ceramic and bio balls, add some live sand and live rock and wait it out. So that's where I'm at.
I also purchased a test kit and was wondering when to start testing. I also found something on one of the LR's I purchased. Can anybody identify it?
Thanks
J

Welcome to TRT. I started testing my water about 2-3 weeks in. Did you get fully cured live rock? How long has the tank been set up?

Thanks for the welcome...I set the tank up on Friday, 3-24. I swung by my LFS today and asked about the LR being cured, and he said it was. One of the other guys there shut me down on buying a piece today because it wasn't fully cured. They seem pretty fair and knowledgable. We'll see if I still feel that way in a few months.

Cool if the rock was fully cured and wasn't out of water long you shouldn't have a very long cycle

This will be tough because I'm an impatient bastage. With freshwater I could fill the tank up with the hose, add some conditioner, and throw the fish in like four minutes later and they'd live for years!

hey there welcome to TRT i have had my nano cube 24G for a little over 2 months i did remove half of the bioballs and the rings were removed completetly. I also replace the stock carbon bag for a Kents Marine Carbon. I pretty much just droped all my fish into the tankabout 5 Hrs latter. all the water was from my 20G tank then i just added 4 more gallons of new water.

Alright, I've got another question.
If you did a water test on a 12g tank on day one, with live sand and 5lbs of LR, what would you expect your parameters to be. Water's from the LFS. I'm trying to understatnd the cycling process as well as I can.
Thanks

well the cycle can take as little as 4 to 6 weeks you will know when your cycle is complete when you nitrates and nitrites are down to 0
you can add some thing to hurry the cycle up i would recomend Cycle from petco. it add beneficial bacteria that will speed it up. your meadia will collect good bacteria and a combination of oxygen. some people also add may one or two fish to cycle. like a cheap little fish like a damsel. some people will say no dont do it other will say it ok. as for me i added 2 damsels in there and had no problem at all. also get some more LR at least 12-15 pounds. on my 24G i have 27 ponds of LR. also if you start it off with water from an established tank you will cycle faster. One important thing to remeber is have patience an money and patience. If you rush into it it will give you a headache in the future. also you will spend you $$$$ if you rush into things. Oh and welcome to TRT

I have the same tank and Ive found that removing all of the stock filtration equipment is definitely for the better.Sponges, bio balls and carbon went out and in the first chamber I put some Chaeto and LR,in the second I put some more live rock, and in the third I put the heater and return pump.I replaced the stock pump with a rio due to the high failure rate of the stock pump.
Also on the return you might want to think about splitting the one nozzle into two to get a more indirect and spread out flow.Again all of the filtration included is just going keep building up nitrate and is not really reef ready.

Do I need any lighting for chaeto in the first chamber? I have one of the sponges in it and bio balls and ceramic rings are gone.
Thanks.

If you have cheato in the chamber you will need light on it. Good to see the bio balls and ceramic rings are gone.
