Nanos and flow...

What do you guys use for flow in your nano? Do you use power heads or would that be too much chaos for a nano? And if you use them how do you position them and how many do you have.... When my water starts to get low and my hob filter's water starts to hit a little harder my corals get POed, so I was wondering if a power head would have the same effect.

It may be more of the bubbles than the flow, but how large of a tank do you have? Is this the 14 gallon in your signature? I know most folks do use some sort of powerhead in their nanos.

There are lots of different power heads. Decide how much flow you need based on what you want to keep (sps needs hi flow, lps not so much) and how your tank is set up (more flow for BB, less for sand) then pick a PH that fits that flow. You can also get one of those flow diverters (I think they are called hydor-flo) if it is still too fast. Also, prop pumps like the nano streams are less likely to make your coral grumpy than a straight stream ph. You would want to point a straight stream at a side of the tank to break up the flow before it hits any corals. HTH

ps Still waiting for some pics on your build thread

It is the 14 gallon and from what I have read it looks like the coral that is going to require the most flow is the toadstool I plan on getting soon, other than that it is just looking like mostly zoas and shrooms, maybe some more lps later but as of now im thinking its going to stay like this.... Oh and i have probably an inch of sand bed.

As for the pictures I will take a few after I get this next shipment of coral in so my tank doesn't look so empty and I am happy with it.

I upgraded to a MJ1200 on my aquapod 12 gal but that is because I did not want to put in extra power heads to save space

well see the reason i ask is b/c im getting a toad stool... and i have read that they like a lot of flow... so should i get a nano prop powerhead and point it at the front glass at the top of my tank or what? I really know nothing about proper positioning of flow.

There really is no proper positioning for flow it really depends on the corals you have in the direction of the flow. Try to get the most flow in the tank without any one coral getting blasted.

If you point the powerhead in one direction and a bunch of corals close up for a week or so and don't like it then try a different position.

If you have an anemone and you change the position then the anemone just might change his location to go along with the change in flow -- just something to keep in mind for tanks w/ anemones

Koralia Nano is a great powerhead for smaller tanks.

I have a Koralia Nano in my tank. As long as I don't point it directly at the sensitive inhabitants of the tank it seems to work well. I just added it though so we'll see how it turns out.
