A small tank is the same as a big tank, with some modifications...if you go with a ten gallon, you could skim, but a skimmer wouldn't be needed on a 5 gallon, just weekly water changes. A ten gallon tank could use a 96watt Powerquad powercompact setup for light. Lighting is difficult on small tanks, as the watts/gal rule gets really thrown out the window. You must think about intensity and such. I have 166 watts of light on my 15 gallon, and that is enough for acros and such, but on a big tank, 11 watts of light per gallon is a HUGE amount! Basically, You'll need lighting, live rock, and filtration, just like a big tank!

In a nano you can simplify the equipment needed to be successful. With just a tank, light, powerhead or 2 and LR & LS you will be set (and water of course). Let the LR do the filtering for you.

yeah, that's pretty much it....you can use purigen (I've never used it myself, I just stick to weekly water changes) to help with filtering...but a pretty simple setup can support some simple corals.
