JBJ Nanocube questions

Hi all. I'm a former aquarium junkie (10 years ago) who has fallen off the wagon. I recently bought a nanocube 12 dx, and have gotten as far as putting 16# of araganite live sand, along with 13# of live rock, in the tank. So far so good, and there are the wonderful and obligatory little critters (bristle worms, feather dusters, copapod thingies, etc) all over the place already. Ultimately I'd like to have easy inverts like mushrooms, polyps, and leathers, plus a couple of sebae or percula clowns. I have a few questions for readers:

1) I already removed the ceramic media and the activated charcoal pouch, but what about the foam blocks? I'm torn about whether those are worth keeping in that first chamber.

2) Silly question, but in a few weeks once the tank has cycled would it be better to add fish or a clean up crew first? I've read differing ideas about whether to add fish first, or the clean up crew. Also, for ~10 gallons what would an ideal crew look like? FWIW, so far the phosphate and nitrate levels are at zero, and there has been no growth of green/brown/red algae--of course I'm only at the end of week one and have been using the lights for abuot 4 hours a day so far.

3) I'm using the Kent Tech-CB two part buffer/calcium solution. Can anyone comment on success or lack thereof in using this potion?

4) Is a gallon a week water change appropriate for nanos of this size?

5) The little power head that comes with these units has an odd little slider on it. What does that little thing do? I'm reticent to put my hands in the tank any more than necessary, but if adjusting something on that power head would increase flow, I'm up for it.

Thanks everyone! I'll post pics (such as they are--just live rock right now--not too exciting to look at!) tomorrow.

Chris

Welcome to TRT !!!
I have a 24gal nano cube and I do 5g water changes every 2 weeks. I still use the carbon and ceramic things I change the carbon once a month and rinse inbetween. I rinse the sponges top sponge every water change both sponges once a month when I change the carbon. I would add a clean up crew 1st then in a few weeks add the first fish.
